Query: When using a curb chain with a pelham or Kimblewick, is there any valid reason why the curb hooks can't go outside the rein ring or D to avoid the curb hooks rubbing the horse's cheeks/lips?
When the hooks are inside the bit rings it seems it can pull very tight and be very uncomfortable for the horse.
I cannot think of a reason why either technique can't be used but it seems to make some people very aerated.

With a Pelham, I run the chain through the rings and hook on the outside, go back 30 odd yrs and this was considered correct , its more gentle in action that way.
Sybil Smith would always put people down when judging if they had the curb any other way ;)

I too was advised by a "known: judge to put the hooks outside :)
Now I want to know what is it with the latest fashion for not using lip straps with curb chains?

I think it is because the chain comes with the bit but you have to buy a lip strap to use, many people do not know they should be used or even that they exist, it drives me mad seeing curb chains sitting in the wrong place without a lip strap, the riders are usually oblivious and I guess their trainers are equally ignorant so it continues to be seen even more.

Can anyone post any pictures to show the right and wrong way as it is often difficult to see these in a lot of photos or a link to a relevant photo?

Doing lots of research it seems acceptable that it can be used both ways. We have tried to see if there are different actions on either the bit or curb chain but it really doesn't seem to make much difference. I can't see the point of being dogmatic about it.
