Out of curiosity, who can I PM? There's a debate on my local facebook at the moment, about a horrendous dog clip, and a lot of people are claiming it's not the same dog - stupid I know, I think I know what I think, but I'd like someone knowledgeable :P to give their opinion? I'm just curious as I know the owner! But it's not right to link it up here...? It is on a local 'open' page though.

I looked last night.
A L/C GSD that had been clipped off with what was no longer than a 7F - more likely a #9 blade.

People were doubting it was the same dog which apparently went in for a bath & trouser trim.
 
Haha no Cayla, not that kind of horrendous! Yep been shaved, wasn't even in for a full trim, and others have come out of the woodwork about their dogs being shaved, or coming back nervous, and some have mentioned him hitting the dogs :O And yep a fair few people decided it wasn't the same dog...
 
Would the owners have any comeback against the groomer PnP? Are instructions just given verbally or does the owner of a dog coming in to be groomed fill in any sort of form with instructions? I don't understand why anyone would think a l/c gsd should be fully clipped, unless its coat was totally matted, so would be furious if this had been my dog.
 
If the instructions were to bath/brush out and a groomer shaved it down for NO REASON then I would imagine that trading standards could enforce a refund. They couldn't "sue for damages" unless the dog was a show dog etc.

However, if the coat was beyond a reasonable amount of brushing (ie matted) then the groomer should have gained signed consent. Many groomers are a little lax in this, believing that the conversation they have at the door is warrant enough.

I would be pretty cross with any groomer in my employ - if they left the dog in this condition. If they had to shave it off, at least do a GOOD job of it. Who knows, maybe the dog was a nutter and the groomer couldn't get near it?

The claim is that the dog was cut in several places. To this I would say that it is possible that:
a) the owner is mistaken and the dog has some sort of skin condition/hot spot/dermatitis/a NIPPLE (I kid you not!) that the owner thinks is an injury caused by grooming
b)the dog was nicked in the process of grooming because of a poor coat condition

There was a big story in the news / facebook a few months back - a white LHGSD where the owners went to the press to say "LOOK AT WHAT THE GROOMER DID" and the groomer came back with photos of her own showing an appalling condition of the dog.

While shaving off a GSD isn't great, it's better than forcing a dog to endure hours of dematting.

Sorry to answer your question MM, most groomers will get their instructions at reception and go on from there, nothing signed. Some will be savvy enough to have a matted pet shave off consent form signed. Some will be even savvier and have a consent form signed for each and every visit. It's a lot of extra paper work that most groomers don't have time/don't want the bother. However,, getting something in writing would perhaps ward off incidents like this.

I've had it happen to me - that I get a dog in and I give a quick glance or feel the coat but something has distracted me or the coat is sopping wet (which can make the coat difficult to assess) and I send the owner away thinking that all is good...til I get the dog out of the bath and on the table, blaster pointed at it and think "OMFG, what mess!" Too late to get anything signed, so the very LEAST I could do is to phone the owner and warn them that the groom will be different or fee higher due to the condition, which was only just discovered. Fortunately I have not had any seriously cross people (at least none that have bashed me on FB) ;)
