Since my horse has been at his present yard (18 months, before hand he was living out so didnt notice it so much) when he is in his stable he rolls his tongue and sticks it out the side of his mouth, opens and closes it and rubs his tongue up his teeth, generally pulling very unatractive faces but all evolving his tongue in some way.

Dentist said his teeth are very good and didnt need a great deal doing to them last time. He eats poos etc all fine.

I wondered if I should be concerned or is this just him, do you think there is any connection with windsucking or such like, and do you think it would have any impact on what bit he has in?...

Don't they say thats a sign of being good natured? I used to know a dear TB called Scrumpy and he used to play with his tongue, mainly just lolled it out like a dog for you to play with it lol X

It could be a boredom thing? You could get him a likit or an equivelent healthier toy to keep him occupied.
Is there wood that he could chew and get a sore/splintered tongue from in his stable? possibly a silly sugestion but you never know!

Mmm good natured, I think I'd refer to him as more of a yob:p

He does very occasionally bite the bars of wood in his stable at feed time but as an attention thing either that or paws the wall. It just seems odd that he does the tounge thing pretty much ALL the time when in the stable. Must admit its quite cute though!

Only some horses seem to be able to stick their tongues out, we had a mare by Primitive Rising that did this, it was apparently something that he did, I can't remember whether its Primitive Star or Proposal who also does it but I think only one does. One of my youngsters also does it, he seems to have a tongue that can do right angles- he did it while the vet was here on Wednesday doing jabs and she laughed and said its unusual but didn't think anything was wrong.

Ah thank you maybe it's a genetic trait then I know nothing of his breeding so it's quite possible
