What is the best way to protect a cushings pony's skin from damage as it is becoming quite fragile with cracks appearing ect

Never heard of that before...whats wrong with the ponys skin? Descript please..

Skin problems are a symptom of Cushings disease .

Where is your Ponys skin cracking? And how?

I would maybe use a gentle medicated shampoo if it's a large area and treat with something like sudocreme and perhaps cover it using a fly rug to protect it against the sun and or flies but it does obviously depend on how and where it is

Is the pony being medicated for the Cushings, W&R? I only ask because one of the first signs I had that Merlin had the disease (and this his immune system was compromised) was when he couldn't handle the normal mite population horses have and started to rub his hind legs. I couldn't believe how fragile his skin suddenly was! This is the damage he did to himself within 48 hours of being a bit scurfy:

The red line near his chestnut is where my fingernail just brushed his skin and it split. Anyway, the vet prescribed washing with Malaseb shampoo and an antibiotic cream at the same time he started the Prascend. The skin healed rapidly and the Prascend put his immune system back on an even keel and his skin went back to normal.

If the pony IS already on medication, I'd be inclined to ask the vet why the skin was fragile plus what they'd recommend. Good luck and I'd be interested to hear what works.

Yes been a diagnosed cushings on precend for several years only now showing signs of skin problems have advised the owner to have a go with the malaseb bath she is planning on using aloe vera juice and agnus castus too

Hmm. I'd probably still give the vets a call but yes, well worth trying agnus castus. M couldn't tolerate more than a quarter of a tablet of Prascend and when his ACTH levels sharply rose last Autumn, vet suggested I give it a try in the form of C-Plus by Feedmark. Results after a few months were remarkable and the combination of the two treatments had bought his levels back down to the top end of normal.
