Cushings Disease- links to melanomas?

Not heard of it. But its possible.. Thinkabout it. Melanoma is a tumour.. excessive growth and in cushings, excess growth hormones are released so I dont see why not..

Be interesting to find out!

Yes that was my thoughts too, I did a quick google on it at work but didn't really have time to go through anything, I'll have another look tonight thanks.

There is a bit of a pattern for cushings and laminitis in greys in their mid teens. I've heard of quite a few diagnosed not long after they first developed melanomas. I don't know if there's been any conclusive research on it though. If you find any can you do a link please? There's definitely something in it, and I'd be very interested to find out what!

Might as well add, the cushings pony I look after at the mo is covered in melanomas and has a cracking growth just under the whorl in front of his flanks.

Thats interesting, I can't find much on it at the moment but am going to ask my vet, mine is having a cushings test on Friday after yet another laminitis attack, but is also covered in melanomas on his sheath and dock areas. I was just wondering really if there was a link between the 2. For what it is worth mine is also a 16 yo grey. .....

cushings is caused by hypertrophy/a growth in the pituitary gland,
melanoma is cancer in the skin.

so I don't think there is MUCH of a connection (not saying there is not one!)
a melanoma cannot cause Cushing's but if the horse has Cushing's maybe it is more likely to have a melanoma due to the compromised immune system!

thats teh only connection I could really think of sorry!

Thank you Lucy thats interesting and makes perfect sense. I think this is something I'd like to look into further, almost makes me want to go back into science. I shall carry on digging and see if I can come up with anything more.

My friend's little grey pony has Cushings but no melanomas, and my "adopted" pony also grey, has a couple of small melanomas but no Cushings. She will be 44 this year and is the healthiest ned in the field!

I have had 3 grey ponies all with unconfirmed Cushings/insulin resistance, non with melanomas
Ponies all unrelated, different symptoms apart from all had gradually increasing hair coat, only one had laminitis and he was the youngest to start symptoms (at 15) he is the only one still alive (now 21)and on a low sugar/starch diet with added magnesium and agnus castis.
