Hi I have 2 ponies both of which have been diagnosed with cushings diesese. I put them on pergolide which has worked brilliantly for 1 of them but my other pony had a horrible reaction to the medication which caused her to have a fit. she was quite subdued, her coat went dull and she wouldn't eat. After speaking to the vet he said to stop the peroglide and she has now gone back to her normal self. I then had her retested just to make sure and the level of ACTH came back alot higher than the first test. The vet has now susgested putting her on periactin but this would mean having 12-14 tablets a day to contol the diesese. I am also concerned about the affects these tablets will have on her. I have heard nothing but good things about the perolide so was very surpised when she had such a bad reaction and now i am nervous this will happen with the periactin.

I have also read that NAF cushinize has worked for some horses. I was wondering if anyone is using this and how well it works for your horse as i am thinking herbal is the way to go with her.
Also is anyones horses using this with medication or if this works without it as i would consider putting my other horse on this as well.

Any feed back would be great as I'm desprate to treat her but i don't want to make her anymore sick by pumping her full of tablets that might make her worse.

Thanks.:)

My horse is on Pergolide 1mg per day and had been on 20 metformin tablets as well at one point (now off the metformin).
As you have discovered yourself some can react to something whilst others don't, has your vet advised if there are any known side effects to the new medication, and if your horse has reacted to pergolide is it likely to happen with the new medication?
Find out what the side effects possibly could be, what the chances are that the horse will react again and make the decision from there, think it may come down to a try it and see, however this time you will be more aware of the medication and can stop it sharpish if you see any sort of adverse reaction or contact the vet for advice in the case of a reaction.

Haven't used Cushinaze before, however she has had something put in her feed call Navilam O (I think) which helps with the blood supply to the feet.

As someone above has mentioned there is also Agus Castus, however if they then grow wings and are completley out the box it could be this causing it, search Agnus Castus on the forum, there was another thread all about this.

If you're thinking about NAF, have a look at this too: http://www.feedmark.com/Product.asp?Product=C-Plus I haven't compared the 2, so make sure you do :) Looks good though. I do feed it for my Cushing's mare, but she's also on Pergolide, so i can't say which one has helped her the most. She's only very recently been diagnosed and only started the C Plus this month. I would post your question on the Yahoo Cushings group if i were you. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/EquineCushings/ They may have heard about reactions to pergolide before. Best of luck. x
