Anyone have any experience of Cushings in young horses (mine is 7 years old – 8 in March) I have an otherwise fit and well horses who is having irregular oestrus cycles and growing an increasingly long coat each winter despite heavy rugging (already in 450g full neck rugs with fleece underneath) she is an exracer and has grown a coat to put most Shetlands to shame! Thinking of getting the vet out to look at her but don’t know if I’m being hypochondriac (again) and going to end up paying a fortune for call out – as I said she is her normal self… anyone had anything similar?

It's possible, sadly my Shetland was lost at 12 years old due to laminitis due to cushings, his first bout of it was as a five year old! Looking back he had some symptoms then and started to grow/ keep his winter coat longer each winter, didn't think it was cushings till he was 7/8 as started drinking more and more too, was put on pergolide but didn't do much for him and kept getting lami in the middle of winter despite not being on any grass:(. Sadly it got the better of him and I had to let him go as quality of life was getting so poor - hope your neddy hasn't got this horrible disease, would certainly reccommend getting vet to do blood tests to be sure, best of luck

Our shetland (9) has just been diagnosed with Cushings. There was a free/discounted drug test available. The cost of the drug shes on is about £1 a day.
She came to us about a month ago very thin and with awful feet. slowly she is coming back to form and is a little cheeky!

Will let you know how we progress and would like to hear your stories too.
Fingers crossed for all 4 of us.

The test Finished on the 30th Nov.
There are many younger horses being discovered with cushings. Treatment is at least £1 a day for the rest of life

Thanks vet coming out to do vaccinations in a few weeks so will speak to them then possibly get a blood test will update you when anything happens!
