so on wednesday my 17yo pony was confirmed to have laminitis, she was tested and has come back a strong positive for cushings. now what do i do?? i am completely in the dark about either of these conditions as i have been incredibly lucky to not even come across one and thus have remained ignorant! since wed she has been on one bute twice a day and on restricted grazing 24/7. she is now trotting around the field and jogged/pulled me down the road today so is clearly much happier. though still hesitant to pick up her front feet. not clear how much of this is due to change in management or bute! she has always been more of a 'needs feeding up' type and, though looking well, is not obese. she has dropped weight and can now see the shadow of her ribs again so can still do to lose some more! vet is organising pergolide(?) but any more advice etc would be hugely appreciated!

The vet will probably start her on either 0.5 or 1 mg of Prascend a day and then retest her levels after a few weeks and adjust if needed. You will need to keep her on a low sugar diet. Ours are on restricted grazing and soaked hay plus low sugar/starch feed if needed. You may find if the dose is too high to start off with she will lose her appetite though sometimes it will just be for hard feed and will still graze and eat hay and the dose will need building up gradually.
Once the condition is stabilised then hopefully she will look well and you will just need her blood testing once or twice a year to check the dose doesn't need adjusting.

I second a visit to The Laminitis Site website and FB page. Andrea is incredibly knowledgable and very generous with her time. If you have any questions, the FB page is the best place to start.
