can someone please give me some info on cushings? we think rupert has it and getting vet out to confirm it next month, but how do you manage it? he is a laminitic on a re-stricked grazing and is dropping weight fast. we dont want to suddenly double his feed as it will strike an laminitus attack. also, we have heard the tests for cushings can cause a laminitus attack?

thank you. sorry for stupid questions and we will be talking to the vet about it when she comes out but just want some basic knowledge.

I used to help look after a pony with cushings. :)

He had a very thick curly coat which he didnt shed in the summer, and wouldnt be clipped so we had to give him a shower if he got too hot :D
He constantly had the squits :p & had to have his bum washed everyday :o
He was like a typical laminitic but didnt rock back into his back legs, he could weight bare easily :) Just kind of shuffled along on his bad days but he was 39 ;)

He wasnt on peroligide (sp?) as far as i know! Or any medication apart from bute on his bad days.

His coat ..

Overall he was a naturally upbeat pony and didnt let it get the better of him :)

I have a pony with Cushings. He was diagnosed over nearly 6 years ago after recurring bouts of laminitis. He has been on Pergolide ever since and he was retested 6 months ago and his levels were at the higher end of the normal range, which is excellent news. The test I ask for measures endogenous ACTH, cortisol, insulin and glucose. A blood sample has to be taken first thing in the morning before feeding. The blood cells have to be separated from the plasma and the sample has to be frozen. Most vets are happy to use this test as it does not run the risk of inducing or worsening laminitis. The other test involves the administration of a corticosteroid, which in some cases does bring on a laminitis attack. With correct medication and management and a quiet environment, ponies with cushings can live a long and happy life.

i am awaiting a result for a cushings test, the vet told me to starve him for 8pm and came out and took bloods at 8am. results take up to a week

my old mare was diagnosed with cushings last year after her second bout of laminits after i talked to the vet as i was sure something else was going on as i had owned her for 9 years by this point and she had never suffered with lami. she also had a very thick winter coat but it didnt go curly and prominent bulges above her eyes. to diagnose she had bloods taken the a few hours later was injected with steroids and then another blod test taken later on that day.
she is on two pergolide a day which touch wood has controled the lami. she gets turned out at 1 and fetched in at 6 and is clipped through winter

Please do a search on here - there is absolutely TONS of info as this is a topic which has come up many times and the information available is now simply vast - too vast to be summed up in less than an hour of typing. All the groups and sources of info on them, too ^^^ but act as quickly as possible on the basics as the sooner you get cracking, the better.
