Doing a bit of market research, Ive begun my little home business selling custom hoodies but the profit margins are rather low asking what I am for them (which I feel is in line with most big companies who can obviously create much cheaper).

How much would you be prepared to pay for a hoodie with a horsey themed slogan (mainly a bit sarcastic / funny) or whatever you want on it? Im asking £25 for one with a set slogan (from my selection) or £30 with a custom one. Id like to ask £30 and £35 but I feel £25 is the price most people would buy at for xmas presents etc.? Thoughts very much appreciated!

I think you need to look at what your competitors are charging (and the quality of their products). I'm assuming it's online? If that's the case, I think going for superior quality material doesn't really pay off as people can't see that, they just see the price and once they've had it they don't really care. If it's face to face sales and they can feel the quality and there's an argument that they'd choose a better quality, more expensive hoody. I suppose you could offer two different types of hoody, a cheaper one and a higher quality one and see what people go for?

You really need good quality hoodies. Have had a few that i have paid a lot for and were just terrible. Went out of shape though they were thicker, waste of money really. One if have currently is my favourite washes and never goes out of shape. Worth paying for. You also have the sizing issue. I like mine big with pockets at the front whereas some people like them fitted.

Thanks for your replies guys.

The hoodies in your list are all at the £25 mark which is why Id set mine at this level. There are 3 sort of levels of cheapness with the hoodies that most crafters buy, I chose the most expensive ones as I didnt want rubbish quality. Ive got some here and they seem good enough quality but I havent had one long enough to wash / wear it much to judge how good it is long term.

whilst horses are great, you could look at 'branching out' into gymnastic, football, rugby, cheer and dance themes aswell, oh and of course anything rainbow, angel or unicorn! might be good to look into?

1 of my most favourite hoodies is no longer made and I would dearly love another one! Grumposaur suits me down to the ground!

I also have a "Save The Chubby Unicorns" one that is worse for wear and again you can't get them anymore. I don't know why we have to save the chubby ones! Surely the skinny ones need saving too ? I cant find a pic of it online, all the ones with thay on it now are about Rhino's. This had a fat unicorn with a rainbow on it.

Sadly I can find cheesy horse slogan hoodies for less than £20 on FB marketplace. I sell a few handbags in a local shop and find that you can't really compare yourself too much to the guys that churn out cheap stuff online unless you want high volumes and small margins.. I'd price at what you need to make and see how that goes. Try charging the slightly higher price and see what happens.its still cheap especially when everything is going up.
