I have very kindly been given extra grassing by the old man that lives next to the yard I'm on, he just wanted to have a pony to look at again after his kids had all left home and they no longer have there own.

It's been lovely all some as we have had endless grass with this field and his own field on the yard.

I asked the old man if I could cut the brambles and nettles down, so that we could try and stop them coming back next year.

Being such a nice man I get there today and hes cut them all down himself with his lawn mower, the only down side now is that there is a lot of cut grass lying on the field.

So my question is, how long until it is safe for my pony to go back in with the cut grass? or is it best to try and rake most of it up?

Thank you.

What a lovely man :D Personally would rake up as then you know your pony is safe and wont come ill :) x

Thank you, I had a feeling that would be the answer, I'm going to make a start tonight.

The man is really lovely, they just love waking up and seeing William everyday! He even moves my muck pile for me !

If the weather is as nice with you as it is with us, I'd leave to wilt for 48 hours - ours loves wilted nettles, and brambles too, and I'm sure the grass would have dried out enough to not overheat - we did our front garden like this the last 2 times we've mowed it, then fed dry in a bucket. Back garden they're grazing today, saves getting the mower and strimmer out!

You could rake it up to be safe, but if theres lots of nice grass growing he probably won't touch it anyway -especially if its just nettles and brambles..

We topped our land this year, and after a couple of weeks the grass has rotted down to nothing - it was flailed, so cut very fine.. The horses were back on it in about 10 days.

Thats so sweet, i have a man like that down my road who just loves eeing my horses :D

Wow, extra lucky with the muck heap :p x

When cut is grass it generates enzymes that causes the grass to ferment and this is what is dangerous for horses as it is poisonous to them. To be safe I would rake up all the cut grass and leave your horse off it for 2 full weeks.
