I put a different bit in Grace the other night, and this morning I noticed she has a rub at the side of her mouth (nothing actually in her mouth). It is a loose ring snaffle (Nueue Schule one like the KK) and is slightly bigger than the 5 1/2 snaffle she had in as it's loose ring.

Has anyone else's horse had this and could you suggest anything??? Do I need to look for a new bit, maybe put my Myler in her for a while?

It's only on one side too...

Can't use bit guards as going to start competing in dressage soon and they are not allowed in the BD rule book.

IS it just like a rub, or actually drawn blood? My boy has slightly bald patches atthe corners of his mouth, but never sore, just where the skin has toughened up.....

It is not bleeding, just rubbed the top layer of skin off and hardened the skin around it... I remember my other mare was like this with the loose ring at first until she got used to it. But don't think this should be happening, should it?

If it isnt sore, I wouldnt be too concerned, its just where the skin is toughening up.... May be worth just putting vaseline at the corners of her mouth though if you're concerned about it? It seems to be quite common with loose rings.

Put Preperation H gel on it. Heals them up lovely but of course will have to sort out what is rubbing her.

I used to get that with a loose ring, I got a longer bit (a neue schule one) and that seemed to stop it happening.

I think you need a longer bit with a loose ring than an eggbut etc to get the rings clear of the side of the mouth and avoid pinching/rubbing.

***oops just noticed it is acutally longer than her usual bit - apologies***

Prep H creates a protective film so you can still ride with a bit whilst it heals Thou if I remember correctly that it is a banned substance??? Someone correct me if I wrong though I haven't dare risk eventing on it!
Yes first time someone told me to get it I didnt realise what it was for. Went into chemist in Rugby said can I have some Preperation H. Pharmasist said "Do you want cream, lotion or gel?" I was like I dont know its for a horses mouth! Had to be a huge queue whilst all this going on!! I now have a tube in my tack trunks in case!!
