Just come back form hols and one boy has a cut about 2-3 inches long on his back left leg that runs around the coronary band on the outside of the foot. It is not massively deep but hot and made him lame, how on earch has he got this? He was out 24/7 for first time and this happened next day (now stabled again with a good wash out and MSM cream on it), should I call the vet? I do tend to over-react but not sure how serious. One person on yard sed cracked heals but read that this is yellowy scabbing like mud fever? Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does it look definitely like a cut? Either way would bathe with warm saline/Hibiscrub, dry with a clean towel and apply Intrasite gel, much gentler than other creams from the tackshop ( most are too strong) and encourages healing. Dress with a dry dressing and some vetwrap and see how it looks tomo morning.

Not really lame now, but when he moves the crack opens - poss only 3mm deep but I know that it is really hurting him as he is quite a hardnut!! bless. can pick off mud fever scabs and he stands still!!

The intracite gel you mentioned custardsmum someone else sed about this last nite in the pub (ooops only a few honest!) and does this act like a second skin gel? Will go to chemist and see if they have some.

thanks for your replies, newbie horse owner and never know when to arrange the £30 call out fee from the vet!!

My horse cut him self , wasnt lame and didnt look too bad, then a few days later it looked terrible. Vet checked it out and it was much deeper than I first thought... sooo best to get it checked out and dealt with otherwise could be a long road to recover..

hey sounds nasty poor horsey!!

my horse is a TERRIBLE travleller and she went down in our trailer last year and because she was kicking about and struggling to get up she got a few cuts. she was cut on her coronary band so i wasnt really very sure what to do.

i phoned the vet and explained everything and he said there wouldnt be anything he would be able to do anything if he came out..

what i did though was, washed the area twice a day every day with pethidene anti bacterial stuff. i then put on gel stuff which stopped any dirt from getting in and also stopped flies getting at the cut.

lucky for me it was summer time when she did this so there wasnt much mud around to get into the cut.

this is probably what you should do but if you dont have anti bacterial solution or gel you could call the vet so that they can give you some.

if your fields are muddy it might be an idea to stable your horse only for a few days until the cut dries out a bit.

hope i helped!! xx
