Cut on coronet band

Hi all!

Handy has got a small cut on his coronet band, (right hind). It looks to be small (however with a headtorch and poor light it's not easy!), have cleaned it, hibiscrubbed it and got it as clean as I can get it for tonight. Have put a dry poultice over and vetwrapped it, and stable bandaged (which I do at night anyway).

He looks rather sore on that foot, will have a really good proper look tomorrow morning, doesn't look that deep and he's been stabled all day, so probably overreached somehow. Will cold hose tomorrow, hibiscrub and then dress it? I'll put some antibacterial gel on and been recommended some arnica aswell which dad's picked up.

There's heat in the leg, however it was still quite fresh when I found it so hopefully there's no chance of infection.

Any opinions/suggestions?

Depending on how deep the cut is i would prob not dress it. I would cold hose and maybe wash with hibiscrub like you said and then apply some antibacterial cream, whatever you use, and leave it at that. I have never dressed minor wounds, sometimes its best to let the air get to them so they can start to heal. As long as they are kept clean you shouldnt have a problem. Keep us informed

A (heavy) horse on my yard had a puncture wound on their coronet band and we did everything that you did; hibiscrub and poultice however it was infected so we also had to give her antibiotics. I would wait to see how the poultice turns out as it may be infected even though it doesn't look it, especially if there is heat.

The main thing is it's stopped bleeding. It's tiny and think I've caught it early enough before it got really nasty.
The reason why I've dressed it is for cleanliness but also cause handy's a very dirty horse in the stable and lies down overnight, do don't want any wet/dirty shavings getting in.
