Cut on side

My horse was kicked in the field and has quite a long cut on his side, over his ribs. It wasn't bleeding and seemed to be healing but is irritating him and he keeps picking at it or rolling and reopening it.
Any tips to stop him doing this? I was thinking a rug or just bandaging his whole belly!
I've also only been spraying purple spray on it. Never really had to deal with a cut before

It ll be itchy..just like our scabs get. I wonder if the cut was very neat whether it needed a quick stitch to reinforce the holding together. Maybe flies are landing too and causing irritation..so use a fly repellant in gel or cream form. Sudocreme might soothe and reduce itch.

Good old germaline cream might stop the itch, works on humans. Is it still made ?

Yes it is, I keep a tube at the yard to smear on my many scrapes etc!

Thankyou, I know the flies have been annoying him around it. It was neatly sealed a couple of days ago healing nicely but today opened up ? I'll try sudocrem and fly spray and see if I can find germaline
