Ive put this post in NL as well but its probably better being in here.....

Ive seen a horse that I like however, I need some advice. She has a cut on her withers which is tender to touch but is healing. The seller says she has checked her back and she doesnt have a bad back but when tacked up she tries to bite you. Is this something that will get better and what are the chances of a bad back in the future? I just want advice before I shell out and get a 5 stage vetting.

Thanks

She is unlikely to get through a 5 stage vetting with a cut on her withers IMO, especially as she is also showing some resentment to tacking up. It may be that the biting is just a behavioural problem, but with the cut over the withers I would at least be suspicious there may be something more to it.
I would wait until the cut has healed fully and if you are still interested then have her vetted at that stage.

Ask the seller to contact you when the horse is fully healed - then go back for another viewing. If the horse is fit and healty and you still want it - then go ahead with the vetting.

As it is currently, the vet would not be able to complete the vetting, so your money would be wasted.

My mare has a very old cut on her withers from long long before I ever got her. there is healed pink skin and it has never ever opened in the 6 years I have had her. She has never showed back pain, is in no way sensitive to touch in the area but does bite the air when tacking up, putting on rugs, clipping the area etc. After much prodding and poking and investigating vet concludes it is just a habit with her. She is in zero pain and always just gnashes the air once then stands quiet. So in answer to your question, I wouldn't vet until it is well healed and go back, try her again, tack up etc yourself and see what happens.

Did the owner say what has caused the cut? Saddle, rug rubbing or possibly rolling on something sharp?
Personally I would want to know. A friends horse was rubbed on wither's by a rug and it opened in a cut and took months to heal properly because she is a old horse and had to have a rug on most of the time.
