my sons pony has cut/ split the back of his heel on his off hind,he was very lame when he did it.hosed it clean hibie washed it dry poluticed for two days no muck until today when was weeping a very tiny amount.put cut and heal cream on with pad and vet wrap.he is sound in walk, slightly lame in trot gave one bute please what would you advice from now thank you

My horse came in 2 days ago with a cut heel from an over reach. Luckily the vet was coming to rasp her teeth. He said to wash it with Hibiscrub and to keep it dry for 5 or so days. He also gave me some penicillin to inject her for the next few days and checked her tetanus was up to date. She is slightly lame but he didn't suggest Bute. I should just leave your son's pony for a few more days as long as the cut is clean and see what happens.

thank you its so difficult to keep it clean this time of year and he hates being in the stable but he has had to put up with it for now bless him

turnout boots and dermoline need to keep it clean and dry wash only when needs it - the cut my mare had kept splitting open again think because of the cold weather been much better with the turnout boots to keep it warm and dry

what type of turnout boot would you say was the best to use.?i have a real problem keeping it dry at the moment with all the rain and like you say it keeps opening up

I use Vetguard for cuts it was suggested by my vet a couple of years ago for a nasty cut to my horses knee it worked a treat and healed very well. I have used it several times since it puts a protective layer over the cut (it must be clean underneath) and helps the healing process i wouldn't be without it and have recommended it to friends who now use it. Ask your vet.
