A friend of mine has a horse who has cut her tongue, about 3 inches up from the tip of her tongue right in the centre about 3 or 4 cms long it is quite a gash, this is probably a silly question but is there anything we could do or will saliva naturally wash it?, only if this was anywhere but the mouth we would clean and do all the necessary to aid healing etc.

Would just want to make sure is there anything that can be done for her as it must be quite sore!

Thanks in advance for any answers.

my horse has a scar through his tongue where it was almost severed. He did it before he came to me though so no idea what was done to help it at the time.We think it was the result of some idiot using a wire twitch on him as he was not an easy horse to handle when I first got him and suspect it was used in an attempt to handle him. I know when my friends horse had some teeth extracted they prescribed antibiotics as the mouth is obviously a dirty place in horses and infection sets in easily so I would phone the vet for advice on whether they think this may be neccessary. I would perhaps make some kind of drench using salt water so you can use this to help keep it clean and infection free in the meantime.

have no knowledge of this in horses, however in humans the fastest healing part is the tongue and saliva is the best antiseptic lol, hope this helps
(always take a vets advice if at all worried-thats what they are there for) xx
