A friend of mine has a horse who has cut her tongue, about 3 inches up from the tip of her tongue right in the centre about 3 or 4 cms long it is quite a gash, this is probably a silly question but is there anything we could do or will saliva naturally wash it?, only if this was anywhere but the mouth we would clean and do all the necessary to aid healing etc.

Would just want to make sure is there anything that can be done for her as it must be quite sore!

Thanks in advance for any answers.

hi, this isnt tongue related, but when my oldie had a tooth infection we washed his mouth out with very dilute hibiscrub on vets recommendations, twice daily. Might be quite painful to do with an open wound tho.
At least mouths heal quickly tho! When the oldie bit a chunk out of his bottom lip (he banged his chin on the door) it healed within a week with no intervention.
Has she rung the vet for advice or a visit?

No, only happened this evening and mare is eating and doesn't seem too bothered, we just wanted to check was there anything we could do to make her more comfortable, she was sticking her tongue out a little so must have been sensitive though.

Just a really awkward place and i know how much it hurts if i'm silly enough to bite my own tongue!!

When a horse on our yard had a tooth out the vet advised to bathe with salt water. May help with the healing, it helped the horse I mention.
