my friends horse has a small cut on the inside of her lip, just where the bit lies

my friend didn't notice it for ages as it is really tiny, but she noticed it when the vet was doing her girls teeth

the vet said leave it, don;t ride as the bit will keep opening it up again
so the mare has been rested since christmas

my friend rode her today and sent me a sad text saying that it's started to open up again after only 30 minutes of riding

it is such a tiny cut it seems so sad that such a little thing would stop her riding

has anyone got any ideas what she should do next?

she tried that, it made her mare's nose come up in a bump.

she had a lesson in it so the instructor could make sure she'd fitted it right so it was unfortunate

she won't use it again as she doesn't want her mare (fine TB) to develop a permanent bump on her nose

she's tried so hard, it's a shame

get a big fat rubber bit. get a clean facecloth, some alum potash from the chemist. soak the face cloth in hot water with the potash mixed in then wrap facecloth around the bit. smear more paste of the potash on and put on a bridle and in her mouth. you can ride her in this if you want or just let her stand wearing it for about half an hour. then put some elizabeth arden 8hour cream on. you should see an improvement very fast. my mare has a tiny scar in the corner of her mouth. doesn't hurt her in the slightest and its been there since before her last owner got her. she works quite happily and it never appears fully healed but at the same time its not open or bleeding/weeping. is there any chance thats what this mare has...just a scar???

amage that sounds worth suggesting-it looks like a tiny hole, no bleeding or weeping, very clean.

it looks like an old cut ( it is) that has just decided not to close
my friend adores this mare and thinks the sun shines out of her, so she's desparate to sort it out,

all suggestions are very welcome

many thanks ann82, will text her the link

if the mare reacts in pain when being ridden obviously you have a problem but if not then i would talk to vet and see what they say. mine said put a big glob of petroleum jelly on it before i ride and work away. it doesn't make a difference what bit i have in she still works nice and soft and has no adverse reactions to pressure on the right hand side at all.

she wasn't in pain before the vet noticed the cut, once my friend knew it was there of course it was a different story-she had teh time off and now i think its made it soft again, so my friend is convinced her mare is in pain

i am not as convinced

I know some people that put vasline around their horses mouth before riding so it doesn't rub as much - don't know whether this might help once the cut has healed a little.

ann82- amazingly her boyfriend walked in from work with a tube of glymol that their saddler had recommended, she tried it this morning and texted saying it worked really well for her

so she's feeling a bit more optimistic

many thanks
