My horse has had two cuts on his heels for a few weeks now. There are 2, just at the back of the pastern. He's not been out most of the winter (as we've had no turnout) so it an't have been caused by the mud, but we have swopped over to some chopped straw type bedding instead of shavings and I'm just wondering whether that's causing it They keep opening and bleeding. I've been treating them and cleaning them daily. I've tried dermobion, sudocream and iodine (all on advice from vet and others) but they keep cracking open. He was lame on it a couple of weeks ago and he had a course of antibiotics. He's now slightly lame today again but don't know whether it's the scabs or the fact that he did his first event of the season yesterday and has done something. When he'd come back from XC he looked fine but they were bleeding. OH trotted him up this morning and he was fine, but this afternoon he was slightly off). Help!!! Having new horse vetted this week so will ask vet for more advice.

Try camrosa ointment it really could help something like this. Is it in front? If so can you keep overreach boots on all the time to ensure he does not keep catching it?

If its the front then its sounds like over reach injuries. Carling's got 2, one on each front foot. I washed then with hibiscrub and put sudocream on them, and kept his over reach boots on. He did them about 2 months ago and they are only just going. He was lame as well when he first did one of them. I also bandaged him up with vet wrap to start with 1) to keep it clean cause he was in a muddy field at the start, and 2) because I found he still managed to over reach and make it bleed again sometimes.

Yep like others have said my first reaction was 'over reach injury'
Def put OR boots on to stop him catching and reopening, clean it with warm salty water and cotton wool, put on a wound ointment or purple spray etc whatever you use, then as carling said put on some vet wrap as well as OR boots for the next few days, then just OR boots when its started to scab over

Thanks - I'm almost sure they're not overreach injuries. They're just not quite in the right place. I might try and get hold of camrosa ointment and will carry on with the sudocream. Do you know where I can get camrosa from? Do I have to order it or can I go and buy it from a tack shop? Vet told us not to cover them over with anything but where they are, they just keep opening as he moves around. Will try and bandage them up for a few days and see what happens. I almost hope this is what's causing his slight "offness" as I'd hate to think he'd strained himself yesterday.
