Cuts on Horses Elbows?

My youngster has started to get cuts on his elbows and the only thing i can think is that it is from when he lays down (he tucks right up) they are only a little bit swollen and not affecting him but im worried if it carries on he could get sore ??

anyone got any ideas of what i can do to stop this??

some horses do seem to rest on their shoes when they lie down and get these- hardening up the skin with salt water can work well.
