Can a horse scratch his neck with his hind leg?

My horse has a few scratches on his neck, and I can't figure out how he got them. Can't find anything in his paddock. Saw a sharp little end on his hind hoof on the same side, wondering if that is it. While I know a horse can scratch his head with his hind foot, can he scratch his neck (and could this be it)?

Can't find any reason / thing in the paddock he could be scratching himself on, and 1 other horse there also, no scratches and no shoes on.

Anyone heard of a horse doing this, and how?

thanks!

Malaga can scratch his forehead with his hind foot with me sitting on him (But then we all know anything a horse can do a mule can do better and with a sense of humour! :D )

thanks guys! :) yeah he must have quite a range... its all the side of his neck area... so shoulder height, and then above that as well moving towards his upper neck... all seem to be more of less vertical type scratches, they would kind of fit in how you'd imagine his foot would scratch.

Hopefully thats the cause. I've filed down that little corner on the inside of his hoof, fingers crossed he doesn't get any more.

Mine can, god knows how the daft lump doesn't fall over! I have a calendar of a horse doing it, keep it in my classroom cos it makes me smile. :)
