Now then, before i get slated (again) for asking for veterinary advice on a forum, this isnt anything that needs a vet (well, i bloody hope not anyway), so i'm going to ask!

Mo came in with these yesterday:

One on each hind. I'm guessing they're the result of her being a complete tart with one of the geldings and letting him mount her

and then he stood on her.

I hosed them off, hibiscrubbed, then put germoline cream on. Then today, i hosed again, hibiscrubbed and purple sprayed. The cuts need to dry out, but at the same time they need to be kept clean. What would you do?? She's stabled at night at the mo to keep Molly company while she's on boxrest, so she's getting poo in the cuts!

Anyone had a horse with cuts here before??

Thank you for any advice!

Hope i've not said anything there that can/will start another debate!!

Lou.

you could try some intrasite (sp?) gel as it sets solid so keeping the wound clean but is breathable so good for things like this in case of infection.

i'd be very careful with injuries like those. my mare did a similar injury last spring. we didn't call the vet as it looked quite insignificant so just kept it clean and dry. it started healing fine but after about a week she knocked the scab off, the flies got in, it got infected and she was stuck in the stable for the next 9 weeks because the skin was not able to grow over the bulb due to proud flesh so she had to have her whole hind leg imobilised to prevent the skin from moving, it had to be re-dressed and the proud flesh cut away every 2 days. the healing was painfully slow for such a small (approx 10p size) cut to heal.
but on the other hand my gelding sliced the end of the bulb off completley a few years ago and it healed fine in 2 weeks!
they both wear overreach boots when turned out now

Wear overreach boots on the hinds. I have to do it on mine as one of my horses likes to put his chest agains the others backsides and pushes them round, trouble is he is long striding and treads on their heels. I agree with using the intrasite or vetalintex gel to ensure nothing dirty is left in. Be careful with poulticing as it can draw too much out and cause proud flesh

It was their first time out together. We've had to bring them up from their usual field as the acorns are falling. We put her in with 2 geldings and 2 mares. She's normally just out with Molly and Feather, but Feather's gone on loan and Molly's on box rest, so there was no-one else. She came into season as soon as she saw Duke. He's only 3 and got a bit excited.

Although he's always been out with mares and never bothered with them before.

I would be very wary of the injury in the second picture... my mare suffered a similar injury which refused to heal and started showing what I assumed was proud flesh - I called the vet who came out straight away.. he immediately strapprd the foot to pull the wound back together and my mare was put on strict box rest ... if that hadn't've workrd she would've had to of had a cast on! Apparently sometimes the hoof can separate from the bulb and begin to grow seperately which is disasterous.

My horse had eactly the same problem back in March, ground was too wet to dry it naturally so I had to put dry animalintex & vetwrap on it and kept him in for just over a week and it dried up really well, now its just a little scar!
