I'm going to hijack this thread, slightly!

I posted in the 'Safe place' that our bikes had been stolen from our shed. Blah. Both mountain bikes, relatively cheap ones. Mine was a Decathlon bike, and OH's was Carrera. Insurance company has offered us £600 each to replace them if we buy from this site: https://www.wheelies.co.uk/. Alternatively, they will give us £300 in cold hard cash. We are going with the former, but buying bikes sight unseen online isn't ideal. Trying to narrow down choices and then see some in person in Glasgow, which is sort of a d*ck move to a shop, but it's just an impossible situation.

Can anyone help narrow it down? I am after a mountain bike, up to circa £750. It will do some commuting around town but mostly riding on off-road trails. The technology has changed so much since I lost bought a bike - I don't know if I want one cassette up front or two, or much else about modern bikes. I was about to change the shocks, brakes, and derailer on my Decathlon bike because they all sucked. I'm glad I hadn't got around to that yet, but a bike with half-decent components would be nice.
I'd choose either the Cube Aim Race Allroad 2022 which has 2 chain rings or the Specialized Rockhopper Comp which has one chain ring

I think I’m starting to prefer cycling to riding - less arguments, cheaper to keep, easier to fix of something goes wrong and if not you can keep in Garage at no extra cost! I think the enjoyment is going out of horses for me because of livery yards and cost. Saturdays used to be about a group hack for the last few years I have been going out with the cycling group and ride the horse on my own later in the afternoon.

I hear ya
Although I prefer my peloton and having more time to spend in the garden or walking the dogs rather than at the yard playing horses, mostly on my own, bored with my heart not in it!
