my mare since coming into season 2 weeks ago has been unpredictable to ride, bronking, rearing, spooking when she had been quiet as a lamb before!!! This is my first season with her so i dont know what her others where like!!! she is sore over her flank area if you press and when i last rode she put her ears flat back if i kicked her and when you ask for canter she would arch her back up so it feels like you are on a mountain!!!! its eversince she had the season?? am getting a vet out but what do you think?

The first and last seasons of the year can be more difficult for the mare than others; but just like people some have a bad time all the time.

It is worth calling the previous owners if you know them and find out if the does usually have problems with her seasons. If this is a common prpoblem for her then there are steps you can take to help her.

But two weeks is quite a long time for normal seasonal worries - a week is more common. She is clearly in pain. I would reccommend getting the vet to come and check. Mares can get what is called a prolonged oestrus which is where they come into season but then don't ovulate so the season never ends. Imagine having permenant PMT and period pain! It is easily treated but you need a vet to check. If you have found out about her previous seasons you could also discuss the various management options for her with your vet at the same time.

I understand you haven't had her long - you said this was her first season with you? The other thing worth thinking about - after the vet! - is whether or not there is an element of new owner syndrome here and she is using the excuse to test her limits. Most new horses do this at some point withint the first 6 months. And just now when the grass is coming through is the classic time. She is in pain so get that checked first. But once that settles it might be worth having a couple of lessons or getting someone you really trust to have a ride and see if there is just an element of this.

Poor lass. I hope you can get her sorted soon! Let us know how she goes.
