Today my st poodle went in to get a cyst on his neck taken off. We’d had the cyst biopsied a few months back and the results were sebaceous. All well and good we thought.
I’d asked my busy vet to take it off but she said no rush, and with the new schnauzer arriving with spay and bladderstones ,plus a bloat surgery to deal with ,the time has passed.
Today was his day and he went in at 9.30 am. ,took an hour in surgery, and was released at five pm…The cyst was deep set and larger than it seemed on the surface..it was a “ keratinised cyst” ..in layman’s terms a fatty cyst which had filled with sloughing skin cells, and had hairs that had tried but failed to grow, filling the cyst and decaying inside…
here is the offending cyst that took over an hour to remove..Im still shocked.
This is half the cyst, cut open ,to show me .Rotten smell.

….the thing Ive learned today is to biopsy a cyst..watch if it grows
If it changes from a soft lump to a harder mass, get it off.

ps..Stan says “get well soon “to his friend Daisy who also has had a cyst removed…He feels your pain he says.
