I didn`t thing male dogs could get cystitis but i came in from school run yesterday and my 9 month old male JRT had weed all over the floor and there was loads of blood in it! i got the biggest fright and rushed him to the vets and they said cystitis- has anyone else had a male dog with this?? bitch used to have it at every season but hasn`t had it this time and she never had blood in her urine!

yes my dog had this and his wee was bright red
antibiotics did not help and x-rays revealed one huge bladder stone - this was surgically removed and he had a special diet after that to stop further stones forming.

He was seven (sadly lost Sammy due to old age a couple of a years back)
He seemed to get over the op pretty well actually the worst bit for me was having to get pee samples off him! Also after the op his bladder couldn't hold a lot of water so for the first fortnight or so it meant regular trips to the garden to wee.
The only subsequent problem was that he went on the diet to stop the stones forming a week later he came down with pancreatitis. Whether a link between the diet change and the pancreatitis we shall never know....on that basis he was switched onto a prescription diet to prevent the pancreatitis returning as pancreatitis is life threatening the bladder problem not necessarily so. Happily there were no more pancreatitic attacks and no bladder stone reoccurence and he managed very well until he was pts aged fourteen due to old age infirmity.

pee samples are not a problem at the mo as the little darling is weeing all over the place partly due to the cystitis and mostly due to the Lab being in season, he peed over the kitchen floor right next to the OPEN patio doors!! he is marking his territory, but i will give the antibiotics a good go and see how we get on, Thanks for your advice.
