D&H Competition Country Mix

Yes I used it for two years. Its quite mild, the only reason I stopped using it was because my horse was still too quiet on it. It definitly didnt make them sharp or silly, just gave them a nice edge for showing etc.

The other reason I did it was I found it made him put on weight? But hes a good doer, so that does tend to happen!

Wicked, thanks Jemayni, just what I wanted to hear

She could do with some more weight (so I can turn it into muscle

) so will use this bag and see how we go!

I used to use it on my old horse who was quite lazy, it does have an effect though not a dramatic one, he certainly didn't turn crazy! I tried changing back to a lower energy mix once as i wasn't convinced the comp mix was working and he instantly became incredibly lazy to ride, so switched straight back to comp mix and he was much better. It gave him energy but didn't make him fizzy, just gave more stamina and made him easier to ride. I eventually added propell plus to his feed as well and this made a real difference! It took a few weeks to take effect but once it did it was brilliant, it made a real improvement to his enthusiasm levels, but i expect less naturally lazy horses might go hyper on it.

My dressage (?) horse can be a little difficult to motivate on occasion and at other times is a demon. I found that wearing slightly longer spurs now and again works with him. This week because the rain has brought forth mucho grass he is not in the mood to work so I wore for my lesson on Tuesday and he was very much in front of the leg!!

Mouse is on it too, just gives her a bit more spark but nothing major.
and there was no change in her temperment, ive been very please with her on it and wouldn't change

propell plus is good, do you feed electrolytes v important esp this time of the year. linseed is a natural energy giver if you didnt want to feed too much cereal/corn or what about saracen releve (spelt wrong!!) that has good reviews.

Yes she has salt, although the horse NEVER sweats

Was thinking about Releve but my local doesn't stock it so thought I would try this first

The problem i had with mouse is that i can not carry a whip, (she has been beaten with one and is now very scared and nervous) so i had nothing to back my leg up and i didn't want to sit there nagging, so i decided to put her on a comp mix which seems to have done the trick.
Yes it is very scary although i'm not expecting foalie to make an appearance in the next 7-10 days

Didnt make a difference with winston.
Put him on performance concentrate, that worked much better.
Equally if you are happy with the UB i would just offer her straight oats with the balancer. Then if she goes off her head you can reduce the oats.

Ummmmmmmm should I not feed the UB with the CCM (am VERY happy with the UB, certainly will NOT be changing that) - dammit, I was good with straights, this country has TOO many feeding options!

Hi, I fed it to my Han x Irish as she was lazy but as she had a laid back attitude, it put weight on and made her very grumpy. They say that the oats are either used as energy or if they don`t want to use any more energy it is stored as fat. Roxy is cereal intolerant and when I used the pasture mix, she was ok but not enough uuumph, so tried the competition mix and she came out in little bumps, so we concluded that it was the oats. I have had Roxy on the Dodson and Horrell performance concentrate for about 2 weeks after asking on here and I noticed at a show after about 5 days of having it, she had the old sparkle back, the little buck when going into canter and her taking me into the fences. I also feed her the propel plus and have been doing so for the last 12 months, and I am now feeding soya oil but this is supposed to be good for gaining weight, but I don`t want her carrying any extra weight this time of year.
It`s one thing after another isn`t it with bloomin feeds.

Theres nothing stopping you, but remember the competition mix is a balanced diet in itself, you will end up counter balancing.
I ended up with a fat slug on comp mix lol but the performance concentrate was good for winnie, but it is serious rocket fuel!
Personally i would go for the cheaper (saving you money here) straight oat option. Do you feed her SB? i would feed her SB throughout the summer if you find she needs extra calories.

Good point re the balancing of the feeds. No, I don't feed SB, personally never would, but there you go! Don't think it is calories she needs, just OOOMPH. I still commit to the fact that her strigent German upbringing has ensured she cannot get above her station

Sorry i thought she needed more weight gain?
Well go with the oat option, if she needs more weight blob or two of veggy oil.

Winston didnt have a German up bringing... whats his excuse
grin.gif

Oh yes she does need more weight gain but am happy to let the grass do that

Will see how this sack goes and if it doesn't do the job will go over to oats - was going to buy oats today then got chatting to the girl at the feed merchants and I DO love the appearance of mix...
