I have been advised to put my 8 month old colt onto this feed. I went to my local stockist only to be told it is £12 a bag!!!!

I was totally shocked at the price! Does anyone else buy this feed and if so how much do you pay?

Thanks

I wanted to put my 8 month old on it but I was told that it contained way too much protein!! So mine is on the D&H youngstock mix which lasts a long time and is more balanced.

There shouldn't be any difference in 'balanc in 2 products from the same manufacturer, but in order to get ALL the vits/mins needed you may well be looking at say 2kg a day of mix. That would mean a £10 bag of 20 kg lasts just 10 days.

1kg a day is the probable absolute maximum you'd need of Suregrow, so the same sized 20 kg bag lasts 20 days, so the 'expensive' £12 bag actually works out much cheaper at about £4 a week, no need to add any other feedstuff or supps.

Plus the SG is designed to be low in starch, the mix won't be.

So...is it going to suit him as he is a coloured cob and a very good doer! I dont want anything which is going to make him put on lots of extra weight. He has already got quite a belly on him just from hay and grass!

I was told there was that or foal mix but i wouldnt class him as a foal now.

Mine is a native and also a very good doer!! I was told there are less calories in the Youngstock mix which is ideal for me as I didn't want to pump him full of high concentrate feed when he really doesn't need it!! Go on there website and you can see the exact percentages in each of the feeds and you'll see the difference

No, no it's a bargain, honestly!!!!! It's fab stuff, good as TopSpec which is 2/3 times the price!!!

I was recommended it by a vet, you should only need to feed a cup a day so a bag lasts agggggges

Oh ok, well i went onto their website and it said that the foal mix (which can be fed up to 12 months) is great for good doers. I might try him on that for a bit and then swap to the sure grow once he has reach a yearling.

At the moment he is just on grass during the day, hay at night and a small tea of chaff and suger beet but he seems to have a big pot belly. Any ideas? I dont think i can cut down his food at all as it is all mainly forage i.e. grass and hay. He is wormed regularly although due about now but he has put on a considerable amount of weight over the past two weeks!

Eeek, I confused myself so much when I was trying to work out what to feed my youngster it drove me crazy! I would just have a look at the contents of the feeds and just choose a nicely balanced one. Maybe start him on something more equally balanced as you can always move him on to Suregrow once he's a yearling, but I wouldn't think you need to pump him full of protein at his age. Mine is on a small scoop of D&H Youngstock - which is recommended for natives and a small scoop of lightly molassed charf, grass 24/7 and ablib hay. He also looks like he has a slight belly but has a short back at the mo so I'm waiting for him to grow out length ways! I think you have to bear in mind that they are constantly growing so they do look a bit odd and my vet told me mine was fine and as long as you can feel his ribs have a fair covering that's a good way to monitor his weight. But everyone has a different view on what to and what not to feed!

My boy is a 21 month old warmblood colt. When I phoned D+H they said to feed him either 2.25kg mix or 1kg suregrow alongside 1kg alfalfa and horsehage. He has been having just under 2kg mix and fibergy (alfalfa, straw mix) and the horsehage and he lives out but pretty soon he'll be moving onto the suregrow. Just remember that you only feed 1/2 the weight of the mix in suregrow as it is much more concentrated. Also although he may be doing well at the moment with the mix come spring and summer there may be too many calories if you continue to use the mix which is why I am moving mine onto suregrow.

Second all of that + remember protein is less effectively absorbed than carbs, oils etc...
