Just nipped down to my feed merchant to be told the above!

Not happy. I have brood mares and foals and have been feeding this supplement for years. It has been replaced by another product called Performance mix or something like that anyway. It is supposed to be exactly the same thing as surelimb but in pellet form.

Well it's not. It has half the calcuim of surelimb and significantly less folic acid, and that's just what I can remember from looking at the packet.

I managed to buy the last tub of surelimb in the whole world, and it was 4 months out of date!

Can anyone recommend a good supplement for my neds. They are just mares and foals. Mare is a bit footy when the ground is soggy and has suspected ulcers. (that's another story)

Currently they get

Just grass
charnwood milling linseed meal
speedi beet
Surelimb
Brewers yeast
a little mag ox - poss un neccesary, I just bunged that in to see if it helped with the footyness.

I did look into pro hoof, but it was a tenner more and the calcium seemed a bit low for growing babies........?

Here's the analysis of surelimb for the barefoot geeks! (whose opinion I value muchly) :)

Sorry it's all strung out, it's just how it copied accross.

OMG! WHY??!

Seems very odd! I fed Naf Youngstock supplement before... don't know if thats any good for you? when I was researching supps to provide my filly with all the things she needed in the correct ratios, that one was one that seemed the best... she had physitis and OCD so I had to be very careful...

Otherwise I quite like equivite original as a good all round supplement... maybe add limestone flour for the added calcium?

let us know how you get on

Oh, and the new supplement is for fast growing youngstock (mine are warmbloods so speedy growth is not what I want to encourage) and it contains alfalfa, rosemary, blackcurrent, beetroot, rosehip.............. all sorts of things out horses evolved in the wild to eat...... :s

Dod and hod seem to have stopped making supplements for non TB non beetroot eating horses!

Beetroot ffs!

What ! where are you ? I bought a pot 2 weeks ago in the Midlands.

It's gonna be the last pot you buy!! :)

Seriously, if you like the product, you need to get your hands on every last tub to give you time to research what to feed next, because despite what Dod and hod say, the new performance supplement is not a replacement for surelimb.

It's also more expensive, 3.5kgs for the price of 5kgs of surelimb. It smells nice though if that helps!

I am going to email d&h for the data sheet. I will post the exact list of ingredients on this thread when it comes through.....

It's still on D and H website ?

Is it? I can't find it on there? I clicked on all the products under the herbs and supplements range and it isn't there.

They are revamping their whole range, surelimb isn't the only casualty. The new products are in shiny new blue tubs now too.

It's definately being discontinued, my feed merchant had the d&h rep round the other day, so if it is still on the website, it won't be for long.

Wonderful. Any idea what else I can give my 9 month old RID x Irish cob foal then ? She is in a going up rather than out phase at the moment, 14.3h.

She is on adlib good haylage, sparse grazing and D&H Suregrow at half measure. I have been advised not to let her get heavy, so the SureLimb/Suregrow mix and haylage was working a treat. I have plenty of grass but it would be too good for non TB horses. The horses will follow the cattle when the cows have taken it down.

I don't know what she is going to be, possibly a maxi cob or a hunter. Dam is only 15h but very deep with possibly a touch of Shire in her and sire is 16.3 top end of middleweight RID. At the moment she is looking more hunter than cob.

What are you going to use ?

If you want calcium - then limestone flour is cheap as chips.

I have to say that no one (that I am aware of) has had a forage analysis done in the UK that has indicated anything other than high levels of calcium.

That's why the Pro Hoof isn't as high as you'd like - it's trying to mimic the common trends in UK grazing.

My forage is very high in calcium (so I can't use alfalfa or limestone flour) but it's set to a high phos level, so it's balanced that way. I just have to increase my magnesium, copper and zinc intake to 'jump' over them both, so my horses can access the other minerals properly.

Yes, it might be worth dropping Pro Earth an email. I was interested in the pro hoof anyway, and I could probably drop the mag ox and the brewers yeast if I fed that as it has Yea Sacc in (I think??)

Who do you use to get your grazing analysed? I take my own hay off my land, so it would be interesting to see what the calcium levels are. It's clay soil and holds the nutrients well, but I haven't limed it in 20 years.

Why don't you just add limestone flour? It's what we used to add to the straights when feeding breeding and growing stock in the olden days. Sugar beet is a good source of calcium, too.

As far as I know folate deficiency is unlikely in horses (see here http://www.understanding-horse-nutrition.com/folic-acid.html) so I wouldn't worry unduly in this regard. In spring, summer and autumn your stock will (I assume) have access to fresh grass which will provide the necessary amounts of folate to meet their requirements. And the Just Grass you're feeding should provide some supplementation.

Bummer about Surelimb being discontinued for a pelleted substitute though. It's so annoying when a popular and trusted product is withdrawn without notice.

For those that are interested, here is the data sheet for perform. I had an email from D&H to say that it was nutritionally the same product. I am having trouble getting my head round that as every value is different. Just as an example the calcium content was double the amount in Surelimb than the new Perform.
Also, on D&H's website, it says perform is suitable for fast growing youngstock. Well mine are warmbloods.....

Anyway, make of it what you will, but I am not sure the claim that it is the same product as surelimb in pelleted form is particularly correct. I have asked for more info, so we shall see....

And does this new product contain stupid fricking soya? Because I will really lose the plot then.

I chose this specifically because every other vit and min supp had soya in it. I hate the crap and it's in everything. Came out about the time horses could no longer eat grass, Peroglide, soaked hay and dry lot for life.

Anyway, ranting. Also I could get the stuff in Ireland and not much else is available to me.

Terri

These are the ingredients in the new product

Alfalfa, Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Mint, Basil, Rape Oil, Blackcurrant, Kale, Spinach, Beetroot, Rosemary, Oregano,
Rosehips

As beetroot, kale and and blackcurrents are not what my horse evolved to eat, I shan't be rushing out for this product!
No soya though!!

Thanks for the link. I am trying to find products that only contain fillers that horses eat naturally. The one above has all sorts of bits in that aren't.

I know they are only in tiny quantities, and after much grumping I put up with surelimb, but it does have maize in it.

I am going to use the pro earth products from now on I think, it might cost more but I think it will be worth it in the long run.

I fed D and H Mare and Youngstock to my mare and foal [unplanned pregnancy] it seems to provide all essential vitamins and minerals, is palatable and easy to feed, I add a bit to my ridden horse's diet, seems good value.

This has too much mollases and cereals in for me
