My sister had two minature smooth haired black & tan dachshund pups, that were brothers, called Scooby & Scrappy!!

Unfortunately one was poisoned whilst they were on holiday

(they suspected rat poison at the holiday cottage) but she still has Scooby. They are lovely dogs, although can be a bit nippy with other dogs and my sister's were always spolit so really soft as far as wind/rain/cold is concerned.

She also had a few problems with skin conditions, especially Scooby, as he was much smaller than his brother and his belly often rubbed on the grass. Scooby has also had an operation on a slipped disc in his back. He's ok now but it cost my sis a few hundred in vets bills.
Good luck in your search for a dachsy!

with any daschund you really shouldn't let them takle stairs , they happily do so but it so often causes back problems and slipped discs it's ont worth it. Same thing goes for don't just pick them up by their middle!

Love them but don't have the lifestyle that would allow me to have one at the moment. I will do one day though

dics problems are extremely common in dachs, common enough to put me off. If you do get one please make sure the first thing you do is insure your dog. Spinal ops are £2000+

My mother has had Mini D's for donkeys years - have to say she has never had one with a back problem and all have lived to a great age.
She does live in a bungalow but they jump up on the bed (god knows how!!LOL) and off again, they charge around with the horses etc and go for long walks.

They love hunting down and dispatching rats YUCK!!

They are cracking little dogs with HUGE personalities

I've had dachshunds for years. They are great dogs. I currently have a standard wire, standard smooth and my daughter has a mini wire. To avoid back trouble, buy from a reputable breeder and ask him/her about any history of back trouble in the pups' pedigree. A lot of time disc problems are due more to genetics than injury. Look for a pup with a fairly long keel or breastbone and rib cage and short loin (distance from the last rib to the hip bone). IMHO those dogs are less prone to disc problems. Plus keep the weight down. A dog that is overweight is more prone to disc problems than one that is fit. I would watch them around horses as even though they are small, they don't know it and will try to tackle anything. When I was a child we had a standard dachshund who would follow us when we rode. When she got tired we would put her across the saddle in front and she would balance up there and enjoy the ride. I think she liked being tall for a change.
