Does anyone have one or have experience with the breed?

I know basically nothing about them, but have always liked them and am thinking of maybe getting one in the near-ish future.

I know they're prone to back problems due to confo - is there anything else I should watch out for that's breed-specific?

I like both the standards and the minis (shorthair).

Info appreciated - pics a bonus!

Lovely looking dogs and no advice except to make sure you have insurance!
Last year we were regular visitors to the RVC with my dog and at every single visit there were more dachshunds than any other breed. My husband and I used to say how we would never get one after seeing this. Really sweet dogs full of character though.

Sorry to be so negative and I know this is just our experience but if you do go ahead then buy insurance!

I love them but research tells me I couldn't cope with the vets. I know you like shorthairs but Teckels are fantastic little dogs, like the dachsund before the KC got involved.

Not had one personally but my ex MiL had them and ex BF used to operate on alot of them. MiL had standards (this was in Australia so there may be some differences, he's seemed to be slightly longer legged than the UK ones I met) and they were awesome dogs, I was surprisingly taken by them. They ruled the roost over the kelpies they lived with and the labs.
She never had any back problems with hers and they all made an old age-although all their dogs did tbh. The ones we had in as patients were all lovely as well-a lot of character but a lot of expensive surgery too.
