... from a newbie. Who can't ride.

Could a human keep up with a hunt all day? I'm a cross country runner and would love to try. (SWWilts). Not with the hounds of course - someone told me a hound can do 60 miles in a day - but the horses? how many miles do the horses cover in a typical day? At what average speed? Has it ever been tried, by a fell runner or anything?

Oh, and I wouldn't be trying to jump any hedges...!

thanks for any handy information.

I would say no.. though i may be corrected!

A couple of people I know went on a childrens meet the other day and that was fast enough people couldn't keep up on foot, so I don't think someone could actually run after a hunt and keep up. Especially as horses can canter/gallop quite quickly.

Have you ever seen the event they run in Wales called Man V Horse? They pit riders against runners and see who comes out on top! I think a person has only won a couple of times, but they try to incorporate routes designed to slow riders down to give the runners a chance.

Thanks! Yes I was thinking of the Man vs Horse, I know they make it quite a rocky/mountainous course in parts to give the human beings a chance to catch up. The horse still wins generally though - I guess the advantage in following a hunt might be that the horses can spend a while standing around, or even queueing for a jump while a runner could catch up... It'd still be fun to try! Although possibly a little humiliating...
