I've got a K-reg Fourtrak, and the 4WD isn't working.

Mechanic friend has had a look and worked out that the 4WD gearbox is engaging properly and sending power through the prop shaft (Sorry I'm a clueless woman about cars!!

). But then no power is going to either front wheels.

He guesses that either one of the prop shafts is broken, or the automatic locking hubs.

Has anyone with a Fourtrak had this problem? And depending on what is broken, is it easiy-ish to mend?

My mechanic is more used to working with Mercedes!

Can anyone direct me to any good forums/discussion pages about this sort of problem? Or have any tips?

Any idea how much one or the other problem would cost in parts to repair?

Thanks

From the owner of a much loved Fourtrak (too sentimental for her own good !!

Have you checked to ensure that the front wheel "Free Wheeling Hubs" are locked in the drive position?

As far as I can remember, Fourtracks had manual hubs on them, and to engage 4 wheel drive, you have to manually lock the hubs, but I may be wrong.

If the front prop' shaft is turning, and the hubs are locked in, then the next thing to check are the front axle half shafts, they usually break at the splines where they enter the differential.

You can seek adice on here also http://www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/

Thanks for the reply.

They're definately automatic locking hubs. I never have to get out and turn them by hand, like my Dad used to have to on his old Toyota Hilux.

Do they eventually just seize?

As far as I'm aware they're the originals from new.

I'll log on to the Daihatsu Drivers webbie in the meantime
