Daily driver tow car recommendation? MPG?

Hiya!

Currently have a SWB Terrano 2 Sport which I love to bits & is fab! But, I may have to start doing a 60 mile round commute to work! Terrano does smack on the book figure of 28mpg combined whether its towing or not which is great but doing that kind of mileage a day its a tad thirsty plus a bit unrefined to be spending all that time in.

I'm looking for something that can tow at least 2500kg (My boy is 510kg, friends is 540kg, I always average boxes at 1000kg whatever it is plus 2 people & tack!) and ideally do around 35mpg - going on my figures even a 7mpg increase will save me £70 a month!

Only one I have found so far that fits the bill is a Kia Sorento but has to be a manual to get the decent 35 mpg (I'd prefer a manual too). Anybody have any other suggestions? I have a budget of about £5k

I know the words towing 4x4 & economical dont go hand in hand BUT its either I try to find something a little less thirsty or admit defeat & get a "normal" car again & give up the towing :( So I'm trying!! lol

We choose sorrento for exactly this reason, love it, get about 400 miles on a full tank or 300 miles if towing. However hubbies commute is now hour each way so bought a cheap little 1.2 litre corsa which was so cheap tp insure, and very cheap to run that he uses for commuting - when we worked out figures it paid itself back so quickly - we don't really need 2 cars but it's cheaper to have 2 than commute in 4x4

I'm not sure on the older ones but my Nissan pathfinder manual does 35-38mpg if I drive well when not towing. I stick to 70-75mph on the m/way and don't use the air con unless I need to (and then for the first ten mins) if we have a heat wave I'll put the air con on and pay the extra diesel!
I use mostly country A roads and also the m/way when I commute to work 100 mile round trip. I get over 400 miles to a tank. The person who had it before me was only getting 25mpg! (He left the record on the computer lol) it tows 3000. It's a big car though! My friend has a Hyundai Santa Fe, that would be worth a look as well as the Kia
 
Yup, we did the same as Travelmad, ie, bought a cheap to run car. The Disco spends most if its time sat on the drive (get reduced mileage insurance), and I do my current 120 mile a day round trip in a Mercedes 220 (I think! Just forgotten the model! It's early lol).

It worked out cost neutral to buy it for £5k, insure, tax, and run it compared to commuting in the Disco. I was filling the Disco up three times a week, at £110 a time.
