Anybody else on here own a Dales pony? What are your views on dales in the show ring? I'm fed up of being glared at by welsh pony owners who claim my "Hairy cob" has no place in their "prestigious Mountain and Moorland" class.

Last time I checked, Dales and Fell ponies are entitled to the M&M title too!

One of our liveries has two Dales and none of us with Welsh Cobs complain about her in the showring. We all accept that different breeds suit different people and support each other. Both her Dales ponies are lovely and if they win a show then good luck to them. In fact my grand daughter helped her show one of them a few years ago and got a lovely red rosette. I, on the other hand have a Section D and a Cob/Datmoor cross. Hoping to show them this year.

I have a Dales youngster - I have only shown him once. The problem for me is that being a native I leave him unrugged, he is not stabled will always be barefoot and you are up against stabled and rugged natives especailly in the Spring - this makes a difference. I haven't shown enough to notice any 'glares'. I personally love all natives.

I use a 3 coloured ribbon (red, white and blue) in his tail to show he's a Dales.

This is my hairy beast :)

My man is out most days, stabled at night with a fleece rug if its really cold. he is also barefoot - he doesn't need shoes so why would he have them?!
He is regularly groomed and I keep on top of mud clumps in his feathers as best as i can.

Good luck with your showing!

I didn't mean that all welsh owners seem to hate my boy. some give me some really helpful tips and lovely comments, but you get the ones that think that the "hairy" breeds should have a class of their own!

Then they clearly havent looked to see who usually tops the bill at HOYS and Olympia :D I've never had a Dales but I have a Fell and I do admire the stunning Dales we have up here - The Kilmannan ponies.

They can glare all they want but you cant beat a good pony when the chips are down.

yes to that!

I have a welsh and I wouldn't dream at saying your hairy dales shouldn't be in and M & M class!! That's the whole point that's its all mountain and moorland. Like some1 said previously at higher level welshes have their own class x

Really? I am really surprised you've found this. At county level they won't even be in the same class as the dales will be in with the fells and the highlands. I find it so hard to believe there is this attitude considering what you see at the big county shows and the sheer numbers in the "big hair" classes.

When I was last showing regularly and was attending PUK summer champs, the class before mine was Dales, in the ring were 27 Dales ponies, all dark bay or black, sooo glad I wasn't judging those!!

Any Welsh owners who have that attitude should stick to the shows that have seperate Welsh and M&M classes.
I have 2 Sec A's and a Sec D that I show locally in mixed M&M classes. I spend most of my time admiring the other breeds, in particular the Dales, Fell and Highlands. I completely fell in love with one particular Highland last year and had a great time chatting to his owner about him. He won the class and very deservedly so.

In Scotland the Welsh folks most certainly dont look down our noses at the Hairys. I love Dales, though Im a rider of a sparky Welsh C, but if Bill asked me to ride one of his Dales I wouldnt say no. I secretly want to steal Kilmannon Black Magic as he has so much character and Ive watched since he was a youngster.

Ignore them, they're just jealous

here here lol, I have a wonderful dales whose sire had a great life in the showing world winning most of his classes, ignore them, if they don't like then they should move on higher and just do welshy classes... I don't think anything looks better than a dales flashing round the ring lol but im biased !:)
