I’m wanting to take my Dales pony showing this year... he has mind sweetitch and rubbed his mane late last year (still crying) would you suggest trying to find some extensions so him mane actually looks complete? Or just show I’m in his natural state ... half a mane but still ADORABLE

not looking for tips on how to grow the mane. I’ve just about sorted his diet so he isn’t as itchy and he has coconut oil massages into him mane twice a week to help with the growing... show is in July so won’t have a complete mane in 4 months!

I think I'd try and trim it all up a bit now to even it out and then let it grow together - it will have grown in a good bit by July and won't look as glaring if it is all the same length

Tidy up the rest of the mane, make it all fairly even and see where you are mid june.

id seriously work on his topline though as that will help minimise the visual effect thar half a mane has on horses. Id also point out that hair extensions are against the rules in most M&M classes but some still use them and get away with it.

def what conniegirl says about rules for extensions, the DPS and FPS are only 2 of the very forceful societies which forbid this. The risk is not just being banned from the class but also from the breed society.
Hope you can get growth going for later in the year. I wouldn't touch it myself, just see how it does grow.

Until your false tail falls out in the line up at HOYS! HOYS have their own rules lol!

OP the mane will have grown enough by July to be ok if you tidy up the rest of it. Don't pull the rest of it as short as the baldy bit by any means! My shetland won quite a prestigious class with less mane than my TB's have! So if the pony is good enough it will do well enough. He does need more top line though as currently his mane makes it look even worse.

You can definitely get a decent bit of growth in 4 months using coconut oil. I massaged it in 2-3 times a week and went from completely rubbed off to a good few inches I reckon in a similar amount of time. I will try and find the photos.

I found trimming the mane helped it blend in and stand out less.

I would also just tidy and level off a bit mtg can help it grow quicker it stinks but it works, a lot of judges hate hair extensions I have seen some pull them out! And some breed societies don't allow them I know the Arab horse society doesn't.

I couldn't find the Dales pony one but for the Fells this is the scale of points showing the importance that should be placed on various things. I think the Dales one will be pretty similar.

Height and colour 5
Head, nostrils, eyes, ears,throat/jaw and neck 10
Shoulders 15
Carcase 20
Feet, legs and joints and hind legs 25
Action 25
General characteristics 100
