My horse has just been diagnosed with a damaged Supraspinous ligament in her back. Vet has referred her for a series of shockwave therapy treatment and will review the state of the ligament in 8 weeks, using ultrasound - this will confirm how quickly and effectively she is responding to treatment. She is 12 and has done a lot of competition work in her career. Im worried that after this injury, the ligament will never fully recover and her competition career would definitely end and her ridden work severely restricted - we now only really compete in a few SJ and XC competitions over the summer months. Just wondered if anyone has had a horse experience the same injury (or knows of a horse) and how well they responded to treatment? Thank you.

I have had 3, 2 about 10 years ago and one about 4 years ago so my memory isn't the freshest and things may have moved on; (I don't think shockwave was in use then) my horses were all younger than yours; were scanned at Willesley, all prescribed 10 weeks off and lunging in pessoa (can't remember if that was during or after the 10 weeks off) but all returned to full work 100% fine after the re-hab lunging work. Also one had passed the vet when I bought him despite the injury and it wasn't diagnosed for another 8 months so he carried it all that time and still recovered.

Ok, thanks Tryingmum and TayloredEquestrian - this is reassuring to hear. My vet has said the same thing - to continue to work her on the lunge keeping her as long and low as possible (in pessoa) and a break from the ridden work, and to feed hay from the floor to keep the back stretched etc. Going to work as hard as possible to do everything the vets says and keep fingers and toes crossed that she will come right.
