As of tonight, Hovis is coming back in at night.
The others are still out but the last few nights he's actually tried to come in with me and in the morning he just looks cold, tired and peed off.

I made his bed back up the other day so its ready for him - so tonight he can sleep back in his stable.
I'm having to hay the field until we move to the winter fields as the grass is now non existant so rather than feeding most of the surrounding area (its a little windy!!) I might as well give him haynets in a stable and let him have a decent nights sleep.

I'm going soft, i really am....

Anyone else given in and brought in earlier than they usually do?

Mine have been coming in for the nights for couple of weeks now. They just stand there miserable otherwise, cold, windswept and angry :o
We haven't had the best weather this year, have we? I have enough grass, but only just for horses and the stock (sheep and cattle) are fed in the fields  ... in September for goodness sake!
Good job I have a hay supplier who is happy to be paid when the Single Payment comes in, because the thousands of bales I am going to go through this year would just about bankrupt me!

My mare used to live out then came July we lost our fields so we moved to anlicery yard where all horses HAVE to be in at night .. So come 5 my mare is either at the gate waiting .. Or she's standing in the corner of the field at the top trying to look to see if anyone's coming .. As soon as I call her she runs as fast as she can over to the gate ready to come in .. Spoilt mare! But I must say since I've had her in her condition is fantastic (tb) spoilt horses! Lol

All mine are in at night including the babies every night as feel much safer where we can see them. They are all asleep when I go to bed at 10pm, as watch them dreaming on the CCTV :) Hovis will be much happier too.

Mine never swapped over! The grand old dame will not do an overnight stint so was one of the few coming in at night and the youngster needed an eye kept on him to stop him jumping out or playing too hard. We were in the minority, nearly everyone else took full advantage and had their horses out over night.

Aw, of course you're not being soft, you can tell when they want to come in or stay out. My girl comes in about 5ish and when she sees me she always gallops over to the gate.

Ahhh bless Hovis - sure we'll get the full report on Friday!

Ours are all out and will be until the end of October, assuming we dont have any freak weather! we tend to keep them out overnight until just before bonfire night.

If your horses look miserable and they are very obviously happier coming in then it sounds like you have made the right decision.

I have one section A and one 14hh cob and loads of grass so both of mine are delighted to be out still.

I will be bringing the cob in come November (unless the weather turns really bad before) and that is mainly because I actually find it easier to bring in if I am riding regularly. I like to clip out and get a good routine going in the winter. The Welsh A is only 3 and is turned away at the moment to grow up so he will stay out un-rugged for most of the winter.

The rest of the yard usually do the same but i jsut don't think Hovis is enjoying it anymore and hes quite happy in on his own. That said i suspect that I may start a trend and a few others will bring in too.

The grass is down to nothing in the summer fields and it suddenly feels like winter is on the way. I'm definitely getting soft but as i drove home last night at about 8ish i felt really bad for leaving him out.

So tonight he can have his big shavings bed and a good nights sleep. And tomorrow i will be reminded how much fun mucking out the beast really is..............

I am feeling mean now. BUT winter is going to be long enough as it is so I am making my lad stay out as long as I can

Although at this rate it will still be earlier than I would like

my beautiul lass comes in every night winter or summer (ok odd night out to tart with boys) cause her weight but mmmm have this image of the gorgeous boy (and he is gorgeous) snuggling up and having a snoozeeeeeee - he is the best :) x x x

Brought mine in at nights a couple of weeks ago, however she is 20 and there is not much grass left in her field, she always tells me when she wants to come in by trotting down the field whinnying when she sees me (as opposed to thinking am i going to be ridden or not :D and pissing off up the field ) She looks far happier in her stable for the night with a nice deep bed of shavings and a full haynet

I'm trying to leave mine out aslong as possible this year, we have plenty of grass in the summer patch until atleast the end of november, so fingers crossed but as I'm sat listening to the rain it is hard to leave them out

see im lucky we have great grazing all year and its to good for lass to stay out 24/7 all year so in at night summer and winter(OK she as odd nght tarting with the boys from herd) but mmmmm i do like her in stable and kissing her her night night - can you beat a horse snog noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo you cant lol

We usually like to leave ours out until after Bonfire Night but this year we brought them in at the beginning of September because the weather was so wet that the fields were awash!
We are taking advantage of the fact that they are dry and relatively clean and hacking out before work. And an added advantage is that the old lady has actually put a bit of weight on, since they came in, although she is the one who complains most about having to stay in at night. The disadvantage is that the other 2 have also put a bit of weight on, we'll have to adjust their haylage!

Most of mine stay out as long as possible some all winter but any that are happier in do that.

If its windy and wet most prefer to come in some of my mums come in pretty early and love being snuggly so thats what they do.

If the horse wants to come in and some do then i would let them do that whatever the weather.
