I have a X reg Daf FA45 Tristar box & the other week I found I was losing air. I’d arrive somewhere with air tanks full but after parking up for only a short time the tanks were at about half full & I had to wait for them to refill before I could drive away. This clearly was something wrong.

I got my mechanic to have a look & he heard air escaping from the Air Filter box.....”Oh dear, expensive” he says. The compressor needed replacing, damn! We price the options up. Second had one without any guarantee £420, reconditioned with guarantee £520, new but after market one £720. Of course all these prices are plus fitting. Anyway I go for the reconditioned option & we get it & fit it. All appeared ok, lorry started up, tanks charge & couldn’t hear leaks, job done. Took lorry out Friday & same problem started again. Mechanic comes, checks all out & the bl@@dy compressor is faulty again so it’s been taken off for exchange. I don’t blame mechanic, he’s been great, but why don’t factories build to a standard & check their items before sending them out. Mechanic fortunately isn’t charging me for labour on the replacement as he says I’ve already paid for job to be done but he’s losing out having to do job again. He’s going to try to get something towards his time from the suppliers but he doesn’t hold out much hope.

Years ago this didn’t happen. Now when you buy something you open it up & something is either broken or missing or it just doesn’t work. It really pi$$e$ me off!

Unfortunately this is a sign of the times things are either made badly abroad ormanufactured in this country by people who dont give a damm about quality because they have little or no pride in their work.

I feel for you, I had virtually the same problem with my car. Replaced the clutch and flywheel only to find out the replacement (brand new) flywheel was faulty. It's the inconvenience as much as anything else and I agree, things don't go through quality control like they used to. I seem to be the one to receive all the faulty products :/
