I have just had a very near escape in where I was about to stable several competition horses in Warwickshire. The yard I was about to move to looked very nice, the lady running it appeared pleasant and seemed to know what she was talking about - everything was great.
It was billed as being cheap (£30 per week DIY) because livery wasn't the main focus of the yard but (I know, I know) I should have been more alert. Anyway, on the day I was about to move the horses there, a chance encounter with a local pub landlord meant I found out this woman was a well known 'character' in the local area; she has been reported to the RSPCA frequently, has left previous yards she's rented under a cloud and has been dealt with by the police over allegations of horse theft. Her family are known to the police and earlier in the year they refused to handover a horse they had sold.
Anxious this might be bad grapes on the part of the pub landlord, I spoke to several others in the area, including the police and found the same story - avoid. There have been several scams in the area where people have liveried there horses with (as it turns out, this same woman!) and they've ended up regretting it because of the amount of money it's cost them to rectify general neglect and 'extra' charges that get levelled. As soon as the pressure gets too much, she flits to another yard.
If anyone is thinking of moving to a livery yard in the Lapworth area, PM me and I'll give you the details so you can check this out with the Police yourself. The family have come up several times on this forum for dodgy horse dealing and I'd just rather nobody gets conned - as I nearly did.
