Hello,
Some of you may remember me from a kissing spine story. My horse had the traditional op in Jan 2013 and his back is a huge success. He is now a pleasure to ride and works beautifully. A spanner has been put in the works and he is not sound infront now.
I noticed it whilst hacking, ever so slight bob in his head when bringing his left fore forward and placing it down. I had the vet come to visit him on thursday and he thermal image scanned his legs. The heat showed up the sides of his pasterns and around the coronet band. Side bone has already been discussed by the farrier, but vet is saying it shouldn't be causing the amount of lameness that he is showing after flexion tests.
This is where it gets complicated...
He has always been a little girthy, until a friend suggested I tried him on activated charcoal. The difference in his temperament and girthing up issues have been amazing. He no longer throws his head around like a maniac when girthed, and he's alot more cooperative when ridden.
My vet has given me a box of Danilon to try him on, but the charcoal is not going to allow the Danilon to be digested into the gut (Doing its job i guess!)
He is also on Cortaflex for the stiffness he sometimes shows behind (again a regular thing that a kissing spine horse can suffer from post surgery and rehab).
I am now looking for a happy tummy treatment that isnt going to rinse my bank account but will keep his tummy happy without effecting the danilon. He has coliced 3 times after surgery, usually after going onto different grass and one random episode during his rehab stages. This to me suggested he had ulcers, so I treated him for them. Spoken to the vet about this and he is happy I have gone forward with this. He also no longer burps!
Is there any alternatives to use to make him more comfortable on his bad days that isn't Danilon? And if not, what can I use for his tummy so the Danilon has the chance to work?
I hope this makes sense. My vet hasn't suggested injections, so management is going to be the way forward. He isn't obviously lame until a contact is picked up, and even then its only just noticeable. But after everything he has gone through, i'd like him to be comfortable on his bad days. Farrier is also involved to improve his feet and avoid him squaring off his toes.
Thanks in advance
