£55 seems a lot for some Bute! I paid £25 for 20 sachets last week.

That outrageous re. the prescription, my vet doles me out drugs like they're going out of fashion! I have one prescription for Prevacox that lasts me 6 months, and another for a box of 100 sachets of Bute for when the Prevacox isn't doing it. I don't understand why they can't prescribe you more as surely Bute is something that most of us like to have around, just in case. I know I do!

I actually was really unhappy earlier, the assistant called back and said she had spoken to the vet and they will not give out a prescription without seeing the horse.
To which I said feet are for farriers! Everything else is a vet!

No response and apologised and blamed the rise in drug companies prices.

Im back in on friday and I am
Going to speak with the vet that just charged me £600 for a dog abscess and three teeth removals

I think they're just obeying the law to refuse to prescribe bute without seeing the horse I'm afraid. It's not unreasonable either, as most hoof abscesses, ime, don't need bute, especially after they have been opened. The vet will probably want to see if they think the abscess is a result of something else that's causing pain, like infected bone or a keratoma.

I hope BB is back on form soon.

Ive already told them it was a stone, my farrier is a good one. Farriers for feet unless the farrier cant fix it

But farriers can't prescribe Bute and vets shouldn’t prescribe it without seeing the horse (as you've been told by the surgery even though a vet had already done you a prescription).

Have you thought of using paracetamol?

My longstanding vet happily prescribed me a box of bute for my 2 oldies without seeing them. He will also leave me out antibiotics plus injections for collection. However he knows I know what I am doing and that I will get vet out if necessary. They saw both horses annually for jabs etc.

One vet practice I used refused to let you have bute without visiting. Their reasoning was that people gave it for the wrong reasons. I understand that but when you have a good relationship with your vets and they know how you care for your animal, I think having a few bute in your emergency first aid kit isn't a bad thing. Most experienced owners know when it is appropriate and when to call a vet.

My vet do a 'bute check' once a year, as though her arthritis will go away (and charge me for it obvs).

I know they're just following the rules. But the rules are a bit daft. I will call the vet if she gets worse.

My vet will only give me one box per prescription too, whilst my friends vet will give her a rolling yearly prescription which she can log with the online drug company. So I pay for a prescription every couple of months. Don't know which is right but hers feels more reasonable, mine don't check the horse again just take my cash and email the prescription.

Mine will do me a rolling prescription IF i buy the drugs from them. They then visit the horse every 6 months or so. But if i want to get my drugs from elsewhere then they will only write me a prescription for a one month supply and will have to come to see the horse each time, therefore making it more expensive not to buy their drugs.

Mine have always given me a prescription with repeats on, as long as they see the horse for something every 6 months. They seem to just give me a prescription for one now, which has happened the last two times. That’s not just following the law, which I didn’t mind, it feels greedy. It’s not as if they don’t already get a substantial amount of money from me each year. For Prascend, that’s every two months for two horses. If they didn’t overcharge me in the first place for medication, I wouldn’t be asking for a written prescription!

Has your practice been bought out? Ours has and it still a good vets but so different, no one we have rapport with now.
No, but the old nice guy who knew me and my animals inside out is no longer there and the new vet as much as I value her opinion is working in a very different way. I have been with the vets for over 30 years. Its not like they dont know the horse. They treated him for spas colic last week 😳

I just felt it was a rip off and so much so I might use a horse only vet in future, im not sure.
Im at the vets with little woofy tomo for a check up and I am going to speak with the owner about it.
