Sorry, this should probably be in Veterinary, but I think more people read New Lounge. My poor pony got his muzzle off, pigged out on clover and got laminitis in June. On July 15, he had X-rays as he still wasn't 100% sound on turning, and the vet said he had rotation in his off fore and to keep him on a sachet of Danilon a day for a month. He has got "cow pat" problems...I cut the Danilon to half a sachet a day on Saturday...but he's worse than ever today. I think our vet didn't take into account the Danilon he'd already had prior to the X-rays. He has been on it now for longer than a month overall. Has anyone else had this problem? I think I will take him off the Danilon (I will ask veterinary advice when surgery opens tomorrow) but I wondered if anyone had any ideas what I could try to ease the "cow pat" problem. Yogurt? Weetabix? Poor boy is in a mess despite frequent tail and back end shampoos. He is very perky in himself, eating fine and it definitely isn't a worm problem. He's on soaked hay but I have given him a net of old dry hay tonight to see if that helps! Thanks for reading; very grateful for any ideas.

Thank you, we have a health food shop in town, so I could try arrowroot. I assumed it is the Danilon upsetting pony's system purely because we had this problem when he was on it once before, and it cleared up when he came off it.

Is he still in much pain? If not I would try taking him off the danilon for a few days and see how he goes. It's mainly for pain management, and if he is scouring then that can lead to digestive problems.

My lami pony had acp to increase blood flow to the feet and danilon for the pain, but I cut down on the danilon as he was feeling too good and walking about his box too much. Didn't affect his recovery.

Hiya My boy also had/has the same problem but defo not the danilon, as he was on 1 a day before the enforced box rest due to concussive lami. Vet checked him out took bloods and sample and all normal he put it down to change in diet and routine. I puthim on pink powder and he nearly 100% better - just every now and then it comes back but gone within a day, he now on maintance level and will stay on that till he allowed back out.
hope that helps

My boy had really awful colic on Danilon. Ironic really as the vet gave me Danilon instead of Bute cos he said that the bute would be too harsh on his sensitive little TB tummy! Have never heard of anyone else having problems with it, hope your pony is better soon!

My retired mare is on 1 danolin a day and has been for nearly 2yrs and she's not displaying any side effects at all.

I'd definitely speak to your vet before switching or altering the dose as he/she knows the horse .

I've always found Pink Powder to help with loose droppings, but again I'd consult the vet first.

Thank you so much for all your replies. Pony is not showing signs of any pain or inflammation in his feet now - feet are cool, no strong digital pulses, walking well with heart-bar shoes on fronts - so the vet says to take him off Danilon and see how he goes. He is also having some old dry hay in place of some of his soaked hay. He is very perky but if the "cow pats" continue, I will try arrowroot or pink powder. Thank you again for taking the time to help.
