....... I know this kind of doubles up on the other post , but thought it might get the bute people involved too.... I suppose not everyone has heard of danilon

My horse won't eat Bute but loves his Danilon. He's on it for the rest of his life, but luckily he loves it as each granule is coated in sugar.

My horses prefer Danilon

! I prefer it too as for some reason I believe it is easier on the stomach, could be my imagination though.

If I need it I always ask for Danilon for Jim as I've been told it's easier on the stomach & he's a mostly reformed cribber. I'd use either for Little Un.

Interestingly although Danilon is meant to be more palatable I found it harder to hide in Jim's feed than Bute!

Hello,

Sorry i haven't read all of the replies but as someone who has, in the past had to pay for expensive alternatives to bute (Arquel V) i was wondering what Danilon is and what are the side effects? positives/negatives?

I am particuarly interseted as my eight yr old Clydie has just had to be retired and is facing a long term treatment of bute and would be great if there was something else i could give him that didn't encourage scouring and potential stomach probs.

Danilon is a pro-drug - it is metabolised into bute in the body so it works exactly the same, but comes in sugar coated granules rather than bitter powder. there is some info to suggest it might be slightly kinder on the digestive tract, but the data behind these claims is possibly slightly on the dodgy side!

Any tips on how to get our mare to take her bute. Goncalo prescribed 2 weeks of bute 2 weeks ago - last one tonight but its been a real struggle and today she is really lame. He is coming back to check her on Monday but doesn't look very promising and he said she'll probably have to come to the college if things haven't improved

either get some danilon, or tricks for bute involve jam sandwiches, apples, treacle etc - anything sweet and sugary to disguise the taste.

My arab can smell bute a mile off and no matter how much treacle or molasses you put in his feed he will not touch it if there is bute in it, wever tried every other way of getting it into him with no luck, honey sandwiches, treacle sandwiches, coreing out an apple, putting it in a date, mixing it with apple juice, syringing it into his mouth (mixed with water or apple juice), even tried hideing it in a marmite sandwich.

He ate the feed with danilon in it no problems.

Danilon...
My old boy won't touch bute...he can even smell it in his feed and won't go near a bucket with it in.

Always wants the best he does, and best means most expensive in his eyes! Had me get an emergency call out for him today! Couldn't wait til Monday could he..bless. Is now tucked up in stable on IV pain relief and penicillin.
