My horse has a small wart like thing on his hind leg. Vet calling tomorrow to have a look. I think its a sarcoid. Anyone had something like this successfully treated?

Oooh, and I clicked on to see what on earth a "Darcoid" was!

A couple of horses at work have had some removed, either surgery (not so successful), frozen, or most successful Liverpool cream. The ones treated with Liverpool cream did not return.

A referral to Professor Knottenbelt was sent on Wednesday 22nd April. From what my vet has said, it looks like it will be Liverpool cream. The sarcoid is on his girth line, just below saddle pad (just smaller than a 1p), one on his sheath that was previously banded (around size of 1p) and one on the inside on his hind thigh (smaller than a pea - relatively new and very small).

UPDATE – I got my treatment protocol back from Prof Knottenbelt. Liverpool Cream. So he started his treatment on Wed 6/5/15.

The sarcoid on his girth line (side) and tiny one in between inner thigh will get 75% cream. The one on his sheath (previously banded last June14) will get 100% cream.

UPDATE - He will receive treatment over 8days for 3 small sarcoids: Wed 6/5/15, Fri 8/5/15, Mon 11/5/15 but one on sheath will get an extra application on Thur 14/5/15.

Wed 6/5/15 vet arrived to start treatment. He was twitched, not sedated. He seemed ok. A little down that night and morning. He perked up mid-afternoon on Thur. Dannillon AM & PM in feeds and turnout for few hours.
Friday 8/5/15 vet arrived to perform 2nd treatment application of cream. The one on his girth line (side) has gone slightly bloody / crusty, no swelling or massive change. The one on his sheath has swollen up along with the surrounding skin. I am making sure he is continuing to pee pee. The one on inner thigh hasn’t changed at all. No swelling etc.

He is on danillon twice per day (am and pm) to reduce pain and is an anti-inflammatory. He is turned out for 5 hours per day to try reduce swelling and try keep him happy in himself.
He is currently not sedated for the application on cream. Although is slightly wary of the cream on sheath and inner thigh. He may get twitched next week if cannot get near him.

UPDATE - He received his 3rd treatment yesterday (Monday 11th May) and so treatment has finished for sarcoid or girth line and the one on hind inner thigh. The one on his sheath will receive the last treatment on Thur 15th.

He is still on Dannillon AM & PM every day. He seems happy in himself with his 4 -5 hours turnout. I have been lucky with the weather and little flies around (touch wood).
He is very swollen in his sheath. I am monitoring him to make sure still urinating. The one on girth line is scabby and more swollen, area itself is maybe 3 times size it should be. The one on hind inner thigh is more bloody and skin slightly raw looking. I am keeping an eye on it as skin rubbing / chaffing off other hind inner thigh.

UPDATE - Yesterday, Thur 14/5/15 he received his final treatment on Liverpool Cream to his sheath only. He seemed to take it in his stride. No sedation, just twitched as usual.
Sheath became more swollen, probably the size of 2 large apples. He seems happy in himself.
Vet advised light exercise, e.g. walking in hand or a couple of hours turnout. We need the one on hind inner thigh to scab over so it is not continually chaffing against other thigh and looking bloody.

Vet comes out once per week to check him i think.

I will start lunging him (no roller etc due to sarcoid on girth line) to keep him in light work in few weeks.

I have tried a tumeric paste on my horse's sarcoid with tumeric added to her feed and found it works really well. I only tried it because I saw a friend posting updaes on her horses sarcoid and how it progressed with the tumeric so I thought it was worth a go before trying the liverpool cream. It's shrunken right down and just looks like a small nick at the moment. Good luck :)

Hey,
Im glad tumeric is working but if real sarcoid it will have roots under skin regardless of how big on surface. The longer it is there the more the roots will grow. I personally wouldnt mess with it as can ulcerate at any point even if appears to be shrinking. We all love our ponios and sarcoids are a nightmare :( xx

Thank you all for your detailed replies.
The vet thinks its a wart. Said to treat with human anti wart cream or engine grease! After giving it some thought I have applied Zovirax as its anti viral and some warts will respond to it and die. Also a friend whoes horse had a sarcoid which was banded was told by her vet to apply Zorvirax to it as well.
So far after 2 days of treatment all that has happened is that the growth has become soft rather than the hard lump it was. I am continuing to apply the cream and would be grateful if anyone has used Zovirax to treat warts or sarcoids and how successful or not it was.
