Darned Horse!

I spend a lot of time schooling my horse and she will not canter on the right rein (with the right lead that is) I have tried counter circles, lots of transitions beforehand, cantering from shoulder out etc and if she accidently leads on the right leg she changes - even on a corner (almost physically impossible for most horses!)

But today I whizzed them both round the block and when I got to a nice spot I put my left leg behind to ask for canter and hey presto she led off on the right leg, we cantered all up the hill and across the top (leading the other one I might add) and it felt fine.

Why oh why won't she do it in the school?

Chestnut mare syndrome again I suspect!

I'm helping to re-school an ex-racehorse and he won't go on the left lead. the only way to get him to go on the right lead, without an enormous battle, is over a pole in the corner works every time, eventually we plan to gradually take the pole away so he'll get the idea!

My horse does this, wont canter on the right rein on the correct lead. He's still green and very unbalanced in canter and had spazzy fits when we put a pole down. My Boss got on him and played around and found that when she was on the right rein and asked for canter left he went on to the correct lead

Dont know if that is of any help to you, but if you feel how I felt anything is worth a try.

maybe the horse is finding it hard to work off the inside hind leg on that rein? You could try to strengthen them on that leg and encourage the bend on that rein by doing lots of shoulder in on that rein and leg yeilding out of circles although this is no quick fix option im afraid. hope you find a solution that works for you.
