Hi everyone,

The sun is shining today, but I'm not feeling the love (partly because I'm sat in a office smaller than a prison cell that backs onto a brick wall, and I want to headbutt my colleagues, but that's another story.....) so I thought I'd try to cheer myself by posting an update.

OK. The good.

Took the girls to a new riding club show a few weeks ago. Daughter qualified for the North West SJ champs a while ago, and on the same day as those champs, and at the same place, is the NW Workers champs, so daughter was desperate to qualify for that too - and this riding club was the last show in our area with a qualifier for it. No pressure!

So we arrived, and Dolly was in a good mood (she always is when OH comes along - she luuuuuurves him :o) so fingers crossed, off daughter went. She entered beginners WH (age 12 and under) and did a lovely small course of workers jumps, but on a weird black sandy surface was slipping about a bit. Really nice judge then made each rider do their show after jumping, so they didn't have to wait around (and it was a small arena) - daughter picked up the wrong canter lead, so :( but was still placed 4th out of 8, so was a happy bunny with that. THEN the best bit, others above her had already qualified for the champs, so daughter ended up with a card as it was passed down the line :D That was great, as pressure was off and daughter had got what she came for, very early on!!!

Next class was style and performance. Daughter entered the class, to be shocked to be the only child! There were about 6 others in it, all seniors! I thought they would adjust the jump heights but they didn't  daughter jumped the same as the others, which was quite a beefy course with big logs, fences, gates and an embankment to canter up and a steep slope down straight into the next jump. Dolly rocked it, and put another clear round in :D Came to the placings, and they only went and won it!!!! YEY!!!!!!!! Don't know if judge felt sorry for them as the only junior, but who cares! A lovely (and I mean lovely!) red frilly for Dolly, and of course another qualification card, which daughter happily repaid the favour from the first class and passed it along!

Last class was novice workers, and again daughter was only junior in the class! Beefy jumps again, but Dolly put in another clear :D They did a cracking show, but some of the others in the class were absolutely stunning. They still managed a 3rd out for 6, which was brill.

It was a fab day, and Dolly was simply awesome.

Now for the bad.

Took them to a different SJ riding show comp last Saturday, and Dolly was a horror bag. We had a good few refusals and a bit of napping to the door. She seriously does NOT like this particular arena. Anyway, daughter managed a clear round (with quite a bit of left rein use  away from the door!) and then went into the 65cm class. She had a refusal but managed to get round other than that, which was good given the mood Dolly was in. As only 3 went clear, and there were 4 placings, they ended up jumping off for 4th place. Well daughter flew round like her ass was on fire!!! I was a wreck because I fully expected a stop or her to bomb to the door, and dispatch daughter into "that shed" again!!! But no, they floored it and managed to steal the 4th place.

They daughter decided to have a go at the 75cm. She's jumped a metre at home, but never done a 75cm class before. Well we walked the course, and it was HUGE and nasty. Every jump had something nasty with it. I advised her to leave it and go home, but for once, daughter said, nope, let's have a go (this is where mummy is always right, comes into it!). The first refusal was at the same jump as in the 65cm, with much bigger fillers now. So no surprise. Daughter got her over it and then went to the next jump - which had a nasty black solid filler underneath. Now Dolly has jumped this before, so no excuses. She refused, and daughter turned her straight back to it. Dolly then pricked her ears up, and had a steady canter up to it. She then completely slammed on, and buried daughter into the jump.

Daughter managed to bounce her thigh off the nasty filler and landed in a heap. I came in and grabbed Dolly, but then realised daughter wasn't up and running like she usually is. First aiders ran in, and eventually managed to get daughter to her feet. She couldn't bear weight AT ALL on her leg. PANTS.

Long story short, daughter insisted on getting back onto Dolly, so mounted through gritted teeth and we sadly went back to the van. Daughter was in a lot of pain, and I could see the swelling. I was really contemplating her having a fracture in her thigh bone, but thought she wouldn't be able to stand up if that was the case.

Anyway, we got home - warm bath, ibuprofen and then cold compress and elevation. She was back walking around by Saturday night, and not terrible on Sunday morning either! How I wish I could bounce like that!!!

Sunday she was up early and insisted on riding straight away. She soon found out that she couldn't do rising trot, but after a while it did ease up. She was desperate to prove to me that she would be well enough to have her jumping lesson on Monday night. Which she did.....eventually.

It's worth noting here, that Dolly was distinctly "off" on Sunday. Really really grumpy and when daughter popped a jump (to get her head around the falling off saga, and prove she was ok to me) Dolly just bombed it, and really set her neck. I should have looked closer into this, she was not herself.

The costly........

Well she had her jumping lesson, which was awesome. Dolly was back on form, and Daughter had her confidence repaired by her fab instructor. Who's theory was that Dolly could be in season, having an off day or perhaps has put a bit of weight on with the summer grass as wasn't feeling as fit as she should, and therefore not as enthusiastic to jump. Fair enough, good advice and duly noted.

Anyway, today she's come out of the stable lame.

Three years we've had her in August, and this is the first time. DOUBLE PANTS.

I feel marginally better knowing that her pulling such a dirty trick on daughter on Saturday might not be 100% Dolly's fault (it was the dirtiest of dirty stops and really could have seriously injured daughter) but still devastated that I could have missed something.

I should have listened to her on Sunday. I KNEW she wasn't happy, but she did look fine on Monday night.

I really wish it was possible to cram a lifetime of knowledge into a novice owners brain (I've just said this to Honey08 in an email but it does sum up how I feel). Frustrated that despite trying my best to learn as much as I can, it's no substitute for an experienced eye.

Anyway, I've a few theories. She was shod last week - I'd like that checking. She's pulled a muscle jumping last night (most likely, I think) - the best scenario, as hopefully will mend soon with no lasting damage. Or, of course, laminitis, which we all know she's a good candidate for.

It's a foreleg, and I believe there's swelling around the fetlock (not seen her yet as I'm at work).

So, everyone. If you got this far - WOW! You're really dedicated! Have some really sour fizzy haribos and lucozade - they go GREAT together!

And send me some good luck, and hugs for Dolly.

Here's the photos from the working hunter day.....

Getting ready....

A rare photo with me, that I actually quite like....

A log! :D

Uphills and down dales!

My favourite.

Sorry the quality is pants - stills taken from video.

Thanks for reading all! xxx

Firstly well done to daughter for her show results.

Secondly it's easy to look back and go I should have listened but sometimes, and with mares in season especially, it can be a bit tricky to tell if there is a problem or they ate having and off day/don't like a particular show ground. Hope she is okay and is nothing serious.
Xx

well done for qualifing!! and getting round the scary arena and not hitting the shed! hope dollys ok and is nothing serious, wish i bounced as well as your daughter :) x

Aww, hugs to your daughter and Dolly, and hugs to you, don't be so hard on yourself.

Does Dolly have any heat or a pulse in her foot? Fingers crossed its nothing too bad xx

I was thinking yesterday that we hadnt had an update in a while so were due an epic one lol

Well done to D&D on that WH day

Such a shame that Dolly is lame :( hopefully nothing serious and she will bounce back like your daughter did!

So nice to see a pic of YOU too!

I hope all is ok with Dolly and welldone daughter she has some guts that girl! I liked it when you said I should've put a stop to it, this is me with my daughter I always think no that's enough now and then she's going oh mum let me do it! and I give in only to proved right lol.

I didn't expect you to look like that at all haha :D

Dolly really does remind me of my nf pony, they even look similar...same long back too!

I think all horses are delicate little flowers really, no matter whether they're shetlands or thoroughbreds. As soon as I feel a slight disimprovement in my boy I have the physio and saddler fitter, and something is always picked up on/changed so they really do tell you :) .....my bank balance won't say the same though, physio, saddler fitter and dentist all this week *cries* :(

Look after her though as she is a genuine pony that really does teach kids to ride. Maybe less jumping in-between shows (boring I know) to preserve her so she doesn't go stale etc. But you must get her better for the finals :D

Well done D+D on show results and qualifying. They are such a team.

Sorry to hear Dolly is lame, she might just, as you say, be a bit sore after shoeing, a rogue nail, or twisted herself hooning around in the field and a couple of days rest will look after her.

I hope Daughter is ok, and she isn't too sore after her fall. Maybe Dolly's lameness is a sympathy pain?! ;) (vibes for both)

Ouch for the fall! But you have to fall off loads to be a good rider I heard, and when miniRM is my age she'll look back and mercilessly tease you for allowing such a naughty pony ;) (we do this to our mum but we know we were so lucky with what we got!)

Hopefully she's just got a bit of sympathy lameness... She can join Al's new boy in the hopalong corner for now though, although I think she'd scare the bejeesus out of him :D

Thank you. So do I! x x x

Thanks - it was a relief that she didn't hit the shed this time!! I would have required the paramedic helicopter (and pilots!) if I'd have had that fall!!! Will update on Dolly later x

Thank you. Checking her feet tonight (have done youtube "how to feel pulses" on my lunch hour!) and will report back :(

My thread didn't disappoint on the epic-ness did it!!! :o

Thanks for your encouragement. And for not laughing at my pic

I've said recently, my girl's got balls of steel!! She is a brave one, she surprises me sometimes. Normally it's the other way round - daughter the voice of reason and me going "do it do it" but I just had a bad feeling. Should have (again!) trusted my gut!!! :o

I didn't expect you to look like that at all haha :D

So better or worse, in how I look! lol!!! ;)

Did you always struggle saddle wise with your pony too? The grass belly is causing saddle round shoulders syndrome again. SIGH!!!!!

They don't actually jump much between shows - just one lesson a month and the odd pop over a couple. Definitely got to get her better and lots more fun to have before those legs get too long and start knocking the jumps down!!! :)

Well done D+D on show results and qualifying. They are such a team.

I'm hoping it's a pulled muscle. We'll have to see :(

I've also said about the sympathy pain - they're a pair together!!!

Thanks for your well wishes x x x

Yes, but there must be a limit to this "good rider falling off" saying!!!!! We've stopped counting the falls now

Awwww bless Al's new lad. Hope he recovers soon too. I've missed that - what's caused it???

xxx

Al fell off her first pony over 100 times in one summer holiday. She stopped counting once she got to 250 odd on her second pony... It's character building, I'm sure :D

New boy kicked himself playing XC for the first time, and then a week later his hock blew up to the point Al thought he'd slipped it. Luckily, when the vet arrived it burst and pus poured out, and he's been producing pus since... Looks like it's about to come out again through his coronet band so we're poulticing and waiting for that. Hopefully he should be sound as soon as it's popped and cleared. In a way it's been a blessing- he's gained a lot of weight in his time off, which he did need to do...

I've got one off work and broken too! I'll be the third one of the hat trick! Mine managed to get caught in some (plain thankfully) wire that the sheep snapped, and although she is not lame and the cut is not bad at all, she has got a touch of cellulitis. I haven't been able to ride more than two days in the last three weeks, and now I have 10 days off I was hoping on getting her going again....Not! Unfortunately, my horse does not need any rest to allow her to put weight on, quite the opposite!!

Hey ho! I think Dolly will either have knocked herself jumping, or (hopefully not) have a bit of laminitis. I'd be surprised if it was her shoes.

Oh Look that sounds awful, I really hope he's better soon! For things so big and powerful, they can be so fragile can't they.

Just back from seeing Dolly. She seemed fine (didn't see her walk as box rest) but ears pricked and happy face, not resting legs, moving around the stable happy. Felt all feet and legs, couldn't feel any heat or swelling, and she was happy for me to pick them up. Felt for pulses, could feel them in all four legs but not what I would call strong, but I'm not sure I'd tell the difference, this having been first time I've felt for them.

In short, we'll just have to let time do its thing. She's going to be looked at again tomorrow so hopefully she might look a little better. Poor girl. : (

On the positive, daughter had a lesson on a lovely (bigger) riding school pony who was very good and she wants to bring home with her! Was nice to see her ride someone new.

Everyone have fingers crossed for us, and I'll update tomorrow xxx

Oh Honey!!!! Its the casserole sheep!!!!

I hope Cara is better soon : ( as you say we've made a hat trick!!!

I think if it were shoes it would have shown sooner (shod last Monday) so I'm hoping its a pulled muscle, but I'm painfully aware that dollys a candidate for laminitis. Really hope it doesn't turn out to be that.

Xxx

Well done on the ups, sympathy on the downs! Is it wrong to think that better the pony be lame than the daughter :o but hopefully both will be right as rain v shortly.

Sounds like all of us have had mixed weekends! Hope dolly gets better soon and Daughter isn't too sore.

How long until the championships?

Love it Bernster!! I confess to that crossing my mind! Not worst fall she's had, but a really really bad injury. I was sure she'd broke her thigh bone, the swelling was horrendous. And I've not had many times when I've been walking over to her with dolly and she's not on her feet. Not a walk I Want to have too often.

She was very lucky. And I had lots of wine that night!

Daft hoss- champs are in August. Shes no comps now till mid July, when she's doing the equifest qualifier!!!

Xxx

Mrs.Redmone the rock chick  :D

These yunguns bounce and bend more then us oldies. Glad she's ok and we've all been in the 'I knew something was wrong' position and no doubt will again so don't beat yourself up.

She's certainly a good and gutsy jockey. You must be very proud :)

Hahahaha carefree girl!!! I've hidden my real identity all this time lol!!!!

I'm just kicking myself that I knew she was out if sorts on Sunday but out it down to being in season.

I also feel a bit bad for a few 'tescos' type comments I may have made following her burying daughter in the jump!!! ***ashamed***

Thanks for your kind comments, I am proud of daughter, just not too proud of myself right now. Xxx

Oh no I didn't realise she had fallen!!! :-(
I saw the video and thought Dolly looked a bit sticky. I presumed it was season time for her.
You said her saddle was slipping forward due to her grass belly, if there's no swelling heat ect in her legs. Could her saddle have made her a bit sore in the back due to slipping that can make them appear lame if there backs playing up. Xxx

I thought she looked ok on the video (thanks ZLM for reminding me to watch it!). Don't worry Redmone, I'm sure you haven't pushed her too much or not noticed something, and anyway, there were too many good instructors around to not spot things even if you hadn't on Monday..

She looks sound in the video just a little sticky towards a few of the jumps usually she's quite whizzy and takes a flyer when she's not quite on the right stride but she put a few little short strides but I've only ever seen her on film not in person so could be wrong.
Ponies and kids hey why do we do it to ourselves :-))

Yes, she really slammed the brakes on into a jump (after looking completely and positively like she was going to jump it) it was a big un, with a solid filler underneath and daughter's thigh smashed straight into the top of the filler. She couldn't get up and needed full on first aid assistance :( couldn't bear weight until Saturday night - I really thought she'd got at least a fracture. The swelling was massive - size of the palm of your hand, and best part of an inch raised up. Once we got that down, the pain reduced lots. So I wasn't best pleased with Dolly.

Then we went up on Sunday so daughter could "prove to me she could ride and still have her Monday jumping lesson" and Dolly was just not right. I watched her trot her up, and then ride her and me (and others) could see nothing. Just that Dolly looked so angry and was bending to the outside in canter, and then really rushing when she popped a little jump.

I assumed it was her in season. This was my mistake. :(

She had her jumping lesson (the video you saw) and was fine, very good actually. During the lesson her saddle slipped forward a bit - we stopped and moved it back. And had a chat about her big belly  Her saddle has been good recently and never moved, so I knew she'd put a bit of weight on - despite her actually going down a girth size.

I'd be inclined to agree with you about the saddle, however yesterday morning when she came out lame, there was apparently swelling in one leg.

Will update today when I know more. I'm just hoping she's pulled something.

My dread is laminitis as it's always been in my mind that she's a candidate for it. She looked good last night though. Happy face, pricked ears (Dolly doesn't tend to hide her moods well!) bearing weight on all four, and I couldn't feel any heat or swelling (but wouldn't trust myself to be sure) so I felt a bit better after seeing her.

Will update later today :)

Thanks Honey! I know you're right. I just feel a bit guilty as I was so angry with her for injuring daughter (as you know, because I whinged at you! :o) and then it turned out she wasn't well. Blummin ponies!!! I think she did it on purpose, to make me feel bad!!!

Will update later. Hope Cara is better today xxxx

Never a true word said!!!

Was lovely seeing daughter ride another pony last night though. She had a great time, and it gave me food for thought seeing the size difference.

Conclusion being - he was about 13.2/13.3 and she didn't look any better on him than on Dolly, so she can stick with Dolly for longer and then get a 14.2hh!!!

Actually she's got her eye on a 16hh at the moment.......she belongs to Honey08! :D

Well done to your daughter. From the stills she definitely deserved to win that style class as she has a good position and they look very good together!

Hiya, I hope the girls are feeling less sore today! The ponies have always got something up their sleeves and thank goodness there's not a lot on in July, hopefully it won't be long before they are both getting fit again. Fingers crossed for you all. They are looking fab together, X

Well done on the fab results, and great to see you in the photos as well!

Sorry to hear Dolly is lame, but try not to feel too bad. THese things happen with horses, it doesn't mean that you did something wrong. I hope she makes a quick recovery.

Sorry can't quote as on my phone plus dont know how to either!!!
Your definitely right about going from Dolly to 14.2 no point getting another for the sake of a few inches, if she's outgrown a 12.2 won't be long till they outgrown a 13.2. My plan is for daughter to stay on pony untill she really can't then get a full up 14.2 that should last , plus at that size if its chunky I can easily ride too so helps in winter and when she's busier at school and friends ect.
