We have 2 members of staff at the RS who need their DBS checks updated. So far I have had conflicting information from the BHS. But in talking to Stoneleigh I have now had an enhanced check for myself, this cost about £58. Now apparently I have to pay another £50 to register for a uCheck account who will then process the DBS applications at yet another cost Help!! Has anyone else been through this process recently? Need to get the paperwork sorted asap but this seems bonkers to pay the BHS and then someone else?

Have the BHS done the enhanced check for you already? They may be registered to do them in which case they should be able to send you the link &/or reference number. You shouldn't be paying twice for the same thing.

£50 for an enhanced DBS check is about right but if you Google you might find companies that are a bit cheaper. If you do it with dbscheckonline for instance you'll get provided with a reference number and a link to give to your employer. I usually get staff to pay for it directly and then reimburse the cost to them - only one fee though.

That does sound like you’re potentially being charged for the same thing twice. Around £50 is about right for the DBS check, you may also be given the option of subscribing to the update service for an additional annual cost, but i don’t think that’s very much.

If the BHS did yours, why can't they do the ones for your staff? If you all go onto the update service it's £13 a year each.

I just got the enhanced as you need it for pony club teaching. Think initially its £58 and then subscribe to the update service and pay an annual fee and it works out cheaper.

This doesn't mention any middle ground costs. https://www.bhs.org.uk/about-us/how-we-operate/our-policies/criminal-records-checks/

I'd be asking why the BHS can't do it for you if you're happy to pay whatever it costs these days, £60?

I know I get a bee in my bonnet every time DBS comes up, and yes I know it is essential - I have to have one in my job. But. But..... DBS is NOT an indicator of whether someone is suitable to work with children or not. It is an indicator of whether the person concerned is basically who they say they are. It will admittedly indicate whether someone has any Convictions which would exclude them from working with children and/or vulnerable people, but at the end of the day Ian Huntley the school caretaker who killed two little girls and his "girlfriend" (whatever she was called) managed to bluff the authorities and got one, ditto a lot of other child molesters and their like. Sadly this is the case.
